This book is terrible. Don't waste your money

This book is terrible. Don't waste your money. Poorly edited and replete with typos. The book itself doesn't actually give a quick start introduction to anything except the basic idea behind Agile project management (which, I might add, you could easily discover on your own through a Google search) and then it proceeds to repeat the same generalized information for about 100 pages. You will certainly not walk away "mastering" anything after reading this book. There are no concrete steps or examples that one might use to actually understand how to implement Agile methodology. You'll read through MANY bulleted lists of concepts that would be very helpful to learn more about but, sadly, you never do! A more fitting title for this book would be "A quick overview of Agile principles, how they might be applied to other industries, and basic info about the taking the certification exam." Submitting for a refund ASAP.

Waste of your money

This book tells you nothing about the details of Agile or how to actually use Agile Project Management. It is 80pgs of why to use Agile and how it differs from traditional project management. This isnt even a short version of how to use it. The book is basically a waste. Do not waste your money on it. It is just an advertisement to take a course. I can't believe anyone gave it more than a star or two. Any 5 star rating is a scam by the author. Seriously.

Do not waste your money

This is by far the WORST reference book I have ever read in my professional career. If you want to get an introduction to agile project management or know how to start an agile project management, this is NOT THE BOOK FOR YOU. If you wonder if there are any benefits to agile, vs. water fall, project management, don't mind reading a very poorly written and poorly organized book, and have some money you need to throw away, you may consider this book.
The book is a collection of random thoughts written by a person who may have been part of an agile project team. The contents of the chapters and sections do not match the chapter title or the section heading. The book is filled with grammatic mistakes. It surprises me that the publisher did not proofread the book before printing.

This book describes current, competitive coating technologies for vehicles. The authors detail how these technologies impact energy efficiency in engines and with increased use of lightweight materials and by varying coatings applications can resolve wear problems, resulting in the increased lifecycle of dies and other vehicle components.

About the Author

Sung Chul Cha is a Senior Research Engineer at the Hyundai Motor Group, Automotive, Research and Development Division, in Hwaseong, Korea. He received his Diploma of Engineering (1998) and a Doctor of Engineering degree (2001) in Georesources and Materials Engineering from RWTH Aachen, Germany. In 2002 he became a research associate and postdoc at the Department of Interface Chemistry and Surface Engineering at the Max Planck Institute for Iron Research (MPIE), Düsseldorf, Germany, and continued his research in the field of high temperature materials and reactions including coating technology. In 2005 he began work in the area of materials engineering and material properties at Siemens Power Generation, Mülheim a.d. Ruhr, Germany. Since 2007 he has been employed at the Hyundai Motor Group and responsible for the development of automotive materials. Dr. Cha has published over 20 scientific papers and holds more than 30 international patents. He was a keynote speaker, chair, and reviewer of the session on “Coated Materials” (2014) and a reviewer and chair of the session “Automotive Tribology” (2013) at the SAE World Congress & Exhibition and he was an invited keynote speaker for the SVC 2014 Conference.

Ali Erdemir is an Argonne Distinguished Fellow and Senior Scientist with international recognition and significant accomplishments in the fields of materials science, surface engineering and tribology. He received his B.S. degree from Istanbul Technical University in 1977 and M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Materials Science and Engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology in 1982 and 1986, respectively. His discoveries of nearly frictionless carbon and superhard nanocomposite coatings, as well as a range of novel nanolubricants and lubrication additives, have been hailed as major breakthroughs in the field. Erdemir’s research is directed toward nanoscale design and large-scale manufacturing of new materials, coatings and green lubricants for a broad range of applications in manufacturing, transportation and other energy conversion and utilization systems where further increases in efficiency, reliability and environmental compatibility are the primary objectives. Erdemir has received numerous awards, including five R&D 100 Awards; holds 16 U.S. patents; and has published more than 290 papers, 18 invited book and handbook chapters, and two edited books. He is a Fellow of ASME, STLE, AVS, and ASM-International.

PHILIP NELSON is Professor of Physics at the University of Pennsylvania. He received his A.B. from Princeton University (1980) and Ph.D. from Harvard University (1984). Very good book, ideal for students.

I used Nelson's Biological Physics textbook for a graduate level reading course in physics, and found it excellent for my needs. I haven't taken a biology course since high school, and although I have researched biological systems for some time, I have had a very fuzzy view of biological physics until recently. I was skeptical of a book that claims it is appropriate for students from second year undergraduate through graduate studies, but by using the Track 2 option, and following up some of the cited papers and suggested readings I found it to be quite suitable. Also, the text was well written, and easy to follow - which is ideal for independent study.

Nelson's Biological Physics starts humbly, with a brief introduction of energy, and the size range inherent to biological systems. Using statistical and thermal physics principles, Nelson builds upon simple ideas to end the text with elegant descriptions of complex biological entities like molecular motors and ion channels. Under other circumstances such topics would frighten even the bravest physics student who has had no initiation to the biological realm of study! With little to no biology background myself, I was apprehensive about a course on biological physics, but found that Nelson usually described relevant systems and experimental methods in sufficient detail and from a perspective that appealed to me. If a topic were not described in great detail, the text generally cited additional resources - especially for more challenging topics.

The "Your turn" exercises scattered throughout the text alternated between being helpful and annoying. While useful for engaging the reader, they sometimes provide roadblocks to chapter sections and homework problems when particularly tricky. Also, I found the brief section on matrix mathematics and eigenvalues in chapter 9 inadequate. If the author assumes that readers will have a deficiency in this area, then it may prove more useful to either expand more generally on the mathematical tools described, or to develop an alternative approach to the material in this chapter. Perhaps in later editions an appendix on necessary mathematical material will be added to this text. In contrast, I appreciated the use of real experimental data in the figures throughout the text, and in many of the homework exercises as well. It provided an undeniable credibility to the work, and made the exercises seem more worthwhile, as they obviously related to actual experiments and models.

The book covers a lot of statistical and thermal physics, as necessary for a course intended for second year undergraduate and onwards. Although there was a lot of review for an upper level physics student, the examples were still interesting, and the Track 2 option provided a more in depth look at many topics, with both more challenging text sections and homework problems. The flexibility that this option (in combination with aggressive use of the suggested follow-up readings and independent use of related materials) introduces keeps the book accessible for second and third year undergraduates, while maintaining the necessary academic level for a senior undergraduate or graduate course. I would recommend this book to any student or professor, with either a biology or physics background that is interested in knowing more about biological physics.

Best General Introduction to Biophysics

The field of biophysics has experienced a flowering over the last several decades, with new experimental techniques (such as single molecule manipulation) providing quantitative data that allow for true tests of theoretical models. This book provides a wonderful introduction to the ideas and techniques that are now at the forefront of much of biological physics research. The previously available books are either out-of-date (Cantor & Schimmel's classic series on "Biophysical Chemistry") or are better as a reference for researchers (John Howard's useful book "Mechanics of Motor Proteins and the Cytoskeleton"). Other options for an upper level introductory class (such as Duane's book "Molecular Biophysics") are, in my opinion, not as clear or as well-organized as Nelson's book.

This is the textbook that I would use in teaching an introductory biophysics class.

Updated and comprehensive introduction

Biological Physics by Philip Nelson manages to connect a physicist to relevant names and problems in biology, and a biologist to the methods and tools of physics. Either task is formidable. Philip Nelson manages it by articulating the contexts nicely, and by employing friendly language and plethora of well-thought examples. Nelson has compiled a textbook that provides both the basic concepts and the latest results from biophysics world. I would personally prefer a revision or rewrite in the way thermodynamics and statistical mechanics is introduced and conceptualized here. (For example, the concepts of high vs low quality energy, or limited space awarded to partition functions may be addressed in next revision). Physical Biochemistry by van Holde is a classic text that can be used in conjunction with this text. The book has lots of good problems that help one to become comfortable with the kind of questions that a biophysicist encounters and/or seeks to answer. All the papers cited in the examples or problems included herein have become necessary reads in their respective fields. The power of this text is fully revealed when you follow up and read those theoretical or experimental articles. As such, the book is more suitable for beginners, and the discussions seem too verbose for a physicist or engineer in me. Yet knowing how disparate the audience of this book is bound to be, I consider it to be an immensely valuable treatise.

Good overview, but light on the actual details

Phillips provides a good, general overview of the metrics to consider in evaluating the return on consulting engagements. However, the book could have been significantly improved by the addition of at least one complete example of an application of the suggested method for calculating ROI, including a more in-depth treatment of the many survey methods suggested. Further, some of the snippets of the quantitative examples are simplified to the point of being misleading. Finally, the concept of the scorecard, which was part of the title of the book, was not developed in the text.

How to show the bottom line impact of consulting

It is quite surprising that more reviews have not been written about this text by Phillips, because it is seemingly rather difficult to find other works that directly address the bottom line impact of consulting (especially outside the training space). Before acquiring a copy of this book, be aware that the content is rather substantive, reaching nearly 400 pages. Although much more math was expected, the author's argument that complex formulas for return on investment (ROI) are really not needed made sense after reading chapter 8, which begins by discussing the viewpoint that "the phrase return on investment in consulting is occasionally misused - sometimes intentionally. In these situations, a very broad definition for ROI is offered to include any benefit of the consulting intervention. ROI is thus defined as a vague concept in which even subjective data linked to a program are included. In this book, return on investment is used more precisely and is meant to represent an actual value arrived at by comparing consulting costs to benefits. The two most common measures are the benefit-cost ratio and the ROI formula. Both of these are presented, along with other approaches to calculate the return or payback. For many years, consultants sought to calculate return on investment for consulting interventions. If a consulting intervention is considered an investment and not an expense, then it is appropriate to place consulting in the same funding category as other investments, such as those in equipment and facilities. Although the other investments are quite different, they are often viewed by management in the same way. Thus, it is critical to the success of the consulting intervention to develop specific values that reflect the return on the investment". The lack of complexity is a strength of the process presented, and offered a reminder of a comment made recently by Warren Buffet on Squawk Box (CNBC) that the investor needs to be wary of stock picks based on complicated formulas (i.e. developed by quants). However, there is much more to "The Consultant's Scorecard" than ROI calculation, the subject of which consumes a small portion of the content. Presented are 6 different measures collected in a consulting intervention that present a balanced viewpoint of the success of the consulting project and involve both qualitative and quantitative data collected at different time intervals: (1) reaction and satisfaction, (2) skill and knowledge changes, (3) implementation, application, and utilization, (4) business impact data, (5) financial payoff, and (6) non-financial intangible measures. As Phillips states, "the ROI process [presented here] is not for every organization or individual consultant. The use of the ROI process represents a tremendous paradigm shift as an organization attempts to bring more accountability and results to the consulting process. It is client focused, requiring much contact, communication, dialog, and agreement with the client". However, the opinion of this reviewer as a software engineering consultant is that portions of this process might be utilized as needed, as long as these are taken in context, just as any other modern methodology. Although this reviewer has been known to state to colleagues that everyone uses a process, regardless of formality, since process is really just a way of doing things, because showing the bottom line impact of consulting does involve considerable client involvement, core aspects of this process are expected to be needed to remain in place. This book is well recommended to both consultants and clients, and if the potential reader exists in either of these audiences and does not value ROI, the 14 myths of ROI presented in the introduction to this work are recommended minimum reading.

Highly Recommended!

As any consultant - and author Jack Phillips - will tell you, the days when a consultant could make a living by sharing the latest trendy approaches to business are long, long gone. Today's executives expect consultants to adhere to the same standards of accountability that consultants themselves have advocated for years. Therefore, the ability to determine a consulting project's return on investment is an important skill for both executives and the consultants they hire. Phillips offers a practical approach to ROI that somehow avoids consulting jargon and complex formulas. Although it lacks case studies that show how to overcome specific obstacles to data collection and interpretation, this is a valuable book that fills in an important piece of the consulting puzzle. Best of all, it does so in a common-sense way that can be understood by carbon-based life forms, therefore we [...] recommend this book to consultants and those who hire them.

Get all of Mr. Bishop in one sizzing hot book!

Ummm.....WOW!!! I was lucky enough to get the whole series before it went live at a signing from the wonder Casey Bond, and I jumping in as soon as I got home. There is only so much I can say without giving anything way so I'm going to do my best here to keep this very short and sweet or should I say dark. Jake Bishop is a character in his own category. I'm not even sure how to describe him. He is hot and needs control in all things for his own reasons. This book is full of twist and turns and I never knew what was coming next. The ending had me completely speechless and reeling. To say this is one crazy ride is an under statement. It is a true mind-screw to say the least. Rachael and Casey's writing style and characters compliment each other amazingly and I hope to read more by the both of them in the near future. This is unlike anything I have ever read and I GREATLY enjoyed it!

Dark and twisted, a great and quick read

It is going to be easier for me to review parts 1-5 together I think.

I loved this serial series. This was my first serial series that I had the pleasure to read the entire thing in one sitting. I was on the edge of my seat the entire time. Jake Bishop is a dark, tall, and handsome lawyer with a dark "American Psycho" streak running through him like bloody river. I both love him and hate him, which is what I'm sure the authors wanted me to feel. If you enjoy suspense, romance, lies, betrayal, and other topics on that vein, please pick this serial series up today. Quick read, very entertaining!

WHAT A BOOK!

What a book! The twist in part 5 of this story is totally shocking! I have never in all my life (& I am 74), read a book like "Dark Bishop." It is a romance: starring Jake B. and Sydney C.; a thriller and total suspence starring Jake B. Also, it is told from more than one person's point of view. You really must read this book. It's a 5 star read. Jake walks into Syd's life and ... a very complicated relationship begins. I am not going to say anymore or I will give away some storylines. Definately a 5 Star book!

ESSENTIAL READING! You will not regret purchasing this book!

Professor Larry Leemis delivers yet again! Over the years, I have become a connoiseur of multiple editions of this and other texts he has written. The author is an outstanding teacher with an engaging yet extremely comprehensive writing style, and I have yet to find any text in the field that even remotely comes close to this volume in quality, let alone surpasses it. (I have easily read between 7 and 12 far more expensive texts that attempt in vain to duplicate even mere portions of Leemis's classic!) I have been working in applied mathematics and reliability engineering for extremely complex multibillion-dollar global projects for almost 20 years now, in addition to university teaching, and this is still the book to which I refer all new researchers and students. You will not regret this purchase, and the likelihood that the text will fail you is effectively zero, as long as you approach the book and its subject-matter with serious intent to master it. (The proof I leave as an exercise for the reader!)

Let me once again emphasize: This book contains individual tables and diagrams that you will not find elsewhere, and these would, in and of themselves, easily justify the purchase price of the entire book!

Although the work is exemplary as-is, one suggestion for expanding subsequent editions would be to incorporate a chapter or two on related numerical methods (in the trenches, outside of comfortably standard pre-packaged environments like R and Stata) and discrete event simulation in reliability modeling. While space requirements would necessarily limit the depth to which these could be covered, both are among the author's many strengths, and the book could provide an outstanding touchstone for students and researchers interested in taking the material and going even deeper.

As a practitioner, I implore the publisher and author to continue producing new editions of this outstanding work! We will keep purchasing them!

Very disappointed relatively to what you can found on the Internet for free. I was expeting a lot concerning this book that was recommanded to me but the level is very low and subjects are given with real business cases.
