From Publishers Weekly
This breezy and entertaining book provides a look at how advertising on America's most watched television program-the Super Bowl-has changed over the past 36 years. Kanner, former "On Madison Avenue" columnist for New York magazine, offers delightful tidbits about the commercials, the products and the executives responsible for choosing the ads. Who would believe that there were some 30,000 unsold seats at the first Super Bowl, in 1967, and 60-second spots sold for less than $100,000? Today, with more than 750 million viewers around the world, advertisers pay more than $2 million for 30-second spots. Presenting anecdotes about the ads along with illustrations, Kanner takes readers through time as she discusses such classic lines as "Schaefer is the one beer to have when you're having more than one" and "take it all off" in reference to Noxzema shaving cream. In an amusing piece, "Fossil Fuel," Kanner recounts a popular animated commercial that occurs inside a natural history museum at night: "The bones of a giant tyrannosaurus stir to life, awakened by the intoxicating smell of McDonald's fries. The T-rex sets off to find them. When a dozing guard realizes that Dino wants his dinner, he playfully makes it do tricks, doling out fries as training bait." Particularly insightful is "the dot-com bowl" chapter about the 2000 game. Several Internet companies spent millions of their IPO money on their ads-in vain, as the corporations were out of business by the end of the year. General business readers as well as industry insiders will appreciate the behind-the-scenes look at their world.

A Wonderful Gift for Those Who Love Advertising!
By Donald Mitchell
Advertising is very difficult to do well. Ask anyone who has tried, and they will tell you.
Once a year the American part of the advertising world comes together to display its finest efforts . . . all in the same program, the Super Bowl. What have been the high and low points of these efforts? Why did this event end up being so important to advertisers and their agencies? Those are but some of the questions this fine book will answer.
In my family, the men watch the Super Bowl for the football and the women watch for the advertisements. In past years, I have attended many Super Bowls (where the fans don't usually see the ads) and often wondered why everyone was talking so much about the advertisements during the following days. Having now seen some of the efforts that I had missed, I better understand why some watch the ads for fun.
The book is organized around telling the story of how advertising developed in the Super Bowl. This task is accomplished from a historical perspective, from looking at categories of ads (soft drinks, beer, cars, athletic footwear, food, and financial services), ways of advertising (sex-related stories, animals and by trying to steal attention from the Super Bowl), and major advertisers who have had a big influence on the game's reputation for ads (Apple, Budweiser, Pepsi). In the historical section, much more attention is paid to recent years than the early ones, and you will hear a lot about dot-com companies flopping at the Super Bowl.
In the best of these stories, you get lots of large, full-color stills from the ads, discussions of how the ads were selected, and information about how the advertiser's business fared after the Super Bowl compared to the cost of the ads. Getting permission for all of these stills must have been a brutish task. I spent months just getting permission for one still in a book that I co-authored.
I would be very surprised if a better book is written anytime soon on this subject. The only unavoidable disappointment was that the book was written before the Janet Jackson incident at the 2004 Super Bowl. That would have provided lots of meat for discussion. My avoidable disappointments were that the book didn't provide more detail about the best advertising campaigns that were launched at the Super Bowl and how the success of the ads was affected by the quality of the game.
At another level, this book will appeal to older readers as a sort of walk down memory lane as you recall your life when you first saw these games and these ads. For younger readers, it will be like a glance into a museum to see how much communications have shifted in just a few decades.

Super facts between Super Bowl Sunday snaps!
By Stan Hudy
"The Super Bowl of Advertising" recounts the successes, miracles and flops from all 37 Super Bowls not from the couch, but from inside the advertising agencies that created the spots and the companies that footed the multi-million dollar bills.
"The Super Bowl of Advertising," brings out little-known facts about Super Bowl Sunday besides the cost-per-second of commercials over the years.
Kanner's work, like advertising, is all about presentation as "The Super Bowl of Advertising," with its 6x9 size and use of glossy white pages, filled with video stills of commercials allow the memories of those 30-second sellers to be recalled with ease.
"The Super Bowl of Advertising," is a trip down advertising's memory lane.
Coca-Cola's "I'd like to teach the world to sing," debuted during Super Bowl VI followed by Mean Joe Greene's change of heart after a cold Coke at Super Bowl VII.
McDonald's "You Deserve a Break Today" was seen in 1971 with the accompanying music and jingle from Barry Manilow. The golden arches tounge-twister about its Big Mac ingredients was first heard in 1974.
In 1977, Brother Dominick provided 500 more copies for the abbot utilizing the newly innovative Xerox Copiers with the tag line, "It's a miracle."
1984 the year and the book by George Orwell created a wave that every ad agency wanted to ride and companies wanted to emulate.
The Apple Computer commercial, directed by Ridley Scott, shattered the minds of advertisers and viewers when an athletic blonde hurdles a sledgehammer at the screen, tinted blue, exploding and announcing that Apple Computer will introduce the Macintosh later that week. The ad ran only once, didn't even show the product but it was played again and again on network television, morning shows and still registers today with viewers.
In the 1990's advertisers were forced to decide on what way to approach their viewers as the Gulf War broke out prior to Super Bowl XXIV. While Coca-Cola went patriotic, Diet Pepsi went with "The Right One, Baby!" with Ray Charles and the Uh-Huh Girls.
No advertising book would be complete without paying homage to the King of Beers, Budweiser, and its numerous memorable spots on Super Sunday.
From Clydesdales, to frogs, to lizards, to copiers, catch phrases and the "Bud Bowl" "The Super Bowl of Advertising," describes how Anheuser-Busch became the King of Super Sunday.
Not to be forgotten is the dot.com craze, ads and even faster bust with only Monster.com and HotJobs.com surviving the blitz of 2001.
If you watched it on Super Sunday, like it or even hated it, "The Super Bowl of Advertising" is a quick look back at the action off the gridiron and many of the memories that have stayed with us when the final scores may have faded from memory.

The Greatest Television Advertising Book ever Published!
By Steven Dworman
As a former Adweek Magazine suppliment publisher, I can say without a doubt that if you have any interest in television advertising, commercials, and their results-or even just heading down a nostalgia path, this book is the greatest book ever published on it's subject.
Inside it's pages are filled with full color photographs of the most important television spots in the past 20 years.
But even more important, Ms. Kanner's insightful writing gives us the inside stories of how these spots were created and what happened when they were aired. The background and inside information she's uncovered is invaluable for anyone interested in this field.
If you want to own one book on television advertising, this is the new bible!

Passed test, it's Miller Time!
By CZ
Great book with good questions. Using the digital tests I got from the E-book, I was able to take and pass the CISSP. One handy thing about it was that the new format questions were included as well, so i was able to see what those were like before I took the test.

Oh and when taking the test, take a time out in the middle for a nice bag lunch (packed with love of course) and a short nap. Your mind really will be refreshed after that, it seriously helps.

Passed New 2015 exam
By Spider
Took the New 2015 exam and passed. The questions in this book are great as well as the online engine. This is a good base for the exam.
However None of the questions from the book or the online test engine or the other materials I have used for practice were on the exam, however focus on the explanations given with the answers, they are a good base for cementing the concepts . for pointers for all who are planning to do the exam. Read the official CBK2 4th edition book as well as watch videos on the domains. The old Videos for the old exam are just as good as the new ones. Most importantly cover the material and understand it.

Not Dead Yet: The Memoir, by Phil Collins

Phil Collins pulls no punches—about himself, his life, or the ecstasy and heartbreak that’s inspired his music. In his much-awaited memoir, Not Dead Yet, he tells the story of his epic career, with an auspicious debut at age 11 in a crowd shot from the Beatles’ legendary film A Hard Day’s Night. A drummer since almost before he could walk, Collins received on the job training in the seedy, thrilling bars and clubs of 1960s swinging London before finally landing the drum seat in Genesis. Soon, he would step into the spotlight on vocals after the departure of Peter Gabriel and begin to stockpile the songs that would rocket him to international fame with the release of Face Value and “In the Air Tonight.” Whether he’s recalling jamming with Eric Clapton and Robert Plant, pulling together a big band fronted by Tony Bennett, or writing the music for Disney’s smash-hit animated Tarzan, Collins’s storytelling chops never waver. And of course he answers the pressing question on everyone’s mind: just what does “Sussudio” mean?

Not Dead Yet is Phil Collins’s candid, witty, unvarnished story of the songs and shows, the hits and pans, his marriages and divorces, the ascents to the top of the charts and into the tabloid headlines. As one of only three musicians to sell 100 million records both in a group and as a solo artist, Collins breathes rare air, but has never lost his touch at crafting songs from the heart that touch listeners around the globe. That same touch is on magnificent display here, especially as he unfolds his harrowing descent into darkness after his “official” retirement in 2007, and the profound, enduring love that helped save him. This is Phil Collins as you’ve always known him, but also as you’ve never heard him before.

Answers? Or just more questions?
By Christopher Lingel
*Warning -- potential spoilers below. You have been warned.*

I struggled with this book.

On the one hand, it's a good read. Fast, page-turner. I couldn't set it down, and arrived at work today tired for lack of sleep. Curse you, James Dashner!

In each installment of this series, we get to see more of the world around Thomas and his companions. From the insular maze in the opening pages of "Maze Runner" to now, our view of the world has slowly pulled back. We can see more.

Really, this is interesting stuff. So THIS is how the rest of world is dealing with the zombie apocalypse! (And let's not kid ourselves, that's basically what this is about). There are answers, finally. But not enough. I don't mind stories that are full of questions. I don't mind characters and groups with plots so thick, with so many twists and turns you'd need an entire fourth book just to explain it. But it got tiresome. Not a single character can make any kind of decision whatsoever without another character asking "But what if that's what WICKED *wants* us to do!"

And finally, when we get to the truth...

...

...

...except we never really do.

Thomas never does get his memories back. Hints are dropped that he was a mastermind of the whole thing, but we'll never know. What a wonderful struggle that would have been, as old-Thomas and new-Thomas tried to reconcile what one had planned and the other had experienced. Now THAT would have been interesting. Alas, it was not to be.

Other characters do choose to recover their memories, but that's essentially the last time the reader sees any of them. Sure, they show up at the end, but they show up just to show up, or to get killed off. Not to tell anyone what happened. Not to offer insight into the "whys" and "hows" of WICKED. Just to show up. For all the fuss that was made about them getting their memories back (if they actually did get them back, that is, and not just some fabricated recollections of WICKED), when we do see them again, I'm not sure it really makes any difference. They certainly don't seem to contribute to the final solution, really.

And speaking of the final solution... the final Death Cure... the ultimate responce to the Flare...

I don't want to call it a deus ex machina, but I'll gladly give a shiny new dime to the person who can tell me exactly where it is that Thomas and the others ultimately end up.

I realize I've been critical. Perhaps unfairly so. As a whole, the Maze Runner trilogy is a solid tale. I do not regret purchasing the books, and they shall -- for a time at least -- take up space on my bookself.

My biggest issue is that Dashner has created a story that evokes a great deal of mystery. The first two books weave a story that is intriguing not only in its own right, but also because of what is left in the dark.

My criticism is this: the final book of such a story must bring that hidden portion to light. Not necessarily all of it, but enough so that we, the readers, can have that moment when we look up from the page and go "Oooooohhhhhh! Now I get it!"

Maybe I missed it. But for me, that moment never came.

A disappointing finale
By Bookphile
The more I read dystopian/speculative fiction, the more I realize just how difficult a genre it is. Everything has to be placed so perfectly, all plot twists in a nice, neat line. There has to be a great deal of logic to the world that is created and, when the final chapter is closed, all must be revealed or the author runs the risk of leaving the reader confused. Unfortunately, as I finished the last word of this book, my first thought was, "Huh?" Spoilers will follow, so don't read any further if you don't want to know any of the details.

When I read The Maze Runner, I thought it was a really innovative, creepy idea. It was interesting to speculate about who had thrown the boys and Teresa in the maze and why they were there. The small details that were doled out really helped this atmosphere. When I read The Scorch Trials, though, I felt like things started to fall apart a bit. There was still so little known, so little that made sense. And now, with The Death Cure, I can't help but feel unsatisfied with the story overall. There is still so much of it that I don't understand. As I read the book, I realized that a few things should have been happening: for one, more information should have been doled out over the course of the series. I didn't want Dashner to give everything away in the first book, but there should have been more flashes of memory on Thomas's part, particularly after he went through the Changing. This would have helped solidify details about the world, which would have gone a very long way toward making the events of The Death Cure make sense.

The biggest problem I had with The Death Cure was that it felt to me like Thomas was just flailing along the entire novel, with one instance of sheer dumb luck after another. The world was like a blur, and it was hard to figure out exactly what was going on. I had the sense that Dashner was rolling out setting after setting to show the reader, "See, this is what the world is like!" This would have been fine, had there been an actual purpose to each setting, but it felt more to me like I was being taken on a tour of the world, rather than watching the plot unfold. I strongly feel that there should have been a plan, that Thomas's actions should have had a more deliberate course of action. I just can't buy that he somehow manages to bumble around and, ultimately, is successful. I guess you could say that WICKED orchestrated this, but that just doesn't feel right to me. There were too many variables (yes, I know how much WICKED loves those) for there to be any reasonable expectation that things would play out the way they did.

The other major flaw, to me, lay in the fact that Thomas decided not to get his memory back. While I understood his reasoning, and could buy it, I think it did the novel a real disservice. Had Thomas regained his memory, and had the reader been given a window through which to view the gradual decline and collapse of the world, WICKED's motivations would have made more sense. As it is, I really feel that their motivations made little sense at all. Yes, they said they were trying to find a cure for the Flare. But that doesn't answer the question of why they had to set up such elaborate, physical experiments as part of their research. While one of the characters does explicitly state that WICKED was out of control, using up what few resources remained in their mad pursuit for a cure rather than trying to preserve what was left of the population, I felt that there was still just no good explanation for what they had done. Why couldn't they have simply hooked Thomas and his friends up to machine, induced hallucinations, and measured their brain activity that way? Why did they have to drop them into a maze to get the information they wanted?

Thomas's choice not to regain his memory also had a very adverse affect on Teresa as a character. She just does too many 180 degree turns to really be believable. I liked her so much in the first book, considerably less in the second, and was completely disappointed in her in the third. She becomes nothing more than a plot device, really. Her moment of redemption in sacrificing herself to save Thomas just fell flat because, by that point, she was such an enigma. Had Thomas regained his memories and had the reader been given more insight into what drove Teresa to become what she did, she'd have been more of a well-rounded character.

Lastly, I just couldn't get behind the idea of Jorge and Brenda, and the fact that they had been inserted from day one solely to achieve the ends desired by the Chancellor. Thomas trusts them much too quickly, and his friends acquiesce much too easily, even though they never cease to be suspicious of Brenda in particular.

The ultimate revelation also just didn't make sense to me. Exactly why was the Flare released? The Chancellor says that it was meant as a means of controlling the population, but there's no explanation of why the population needed to be controlled after the solar flares. If an author is going to drop a bomb like this, the reader should have a sense that everything is coming together, a sense that I felt was entirely lacking.

I'm really disappointed by the ending of this series, which is a shame because it was off to such an intriguing start.

Read the first two books and skip this one entirely!
By On the Path
I cannot believe how utterly bad and horrible this book was! The first book, The Maze Runner, was one of the best sci-fi books I've read in a while. It had everything I loved about the beginning of Lost - a great mystery and a creepy environment to explore. The pacing was good and the characters, while not completely fleshed out, were believable.

Then I read the second book. A lot more information came out and some of the mystery was gone. At this point, I was just trying to figure out whether they were in a virtual reality system or the real world. I got what WICKED was about. It was pretty obvious.

SPOILERS AHEAD

Where the cracks started showing in the second book was the rotten decision by Dashner to replace Teresa with Brenda. As a female reader (who identified with Teresa in the first book), it felt like Teresa was just being discarded for a new cutie. And the whole thing about Thomas hating her because she was forced to imprison him by WICKED was just silly and not realistic.

So, in the third book, after totally hating on Teresa for her "betrayal," Thomas has NO PROBLEM with learning that Brenda had been an employee of WICKED all along. Are you kidding me?! He puts his life in her hands, no questions asked, no anger at her lying, and realizes he actually likes her (not Teresa) and barely bats an eyelash when Teresa is crushed under a rock after saving him.

I had to wonder what sort of bizarre ex-girlfriend issues Dashner had after reading that. Just awful. Bloody awful.

And that's just the most egregious example of poor characterization in this book. The rest of the book is just a stupid zombie apocalypse rip-off with Thomas and co running around like chickens with their heads cut off, reacting rather than acting, magically being connected with a resistance group, and not stopping to question if the resistance group could really be trusted even though the group violently kidnapped them.

Then the leader of the resistance group trusts Thomas with the most important part of the mission - planting the weapon disabling device. Seriously?

So the resistance group goes ahead and blows up WICKED, not caring that they are going to kill all the Immunes there, and Thomas is miraculously saved in a deux ex machine where the Chancellor writes him a letter and sends him to a "safe place" through a magical portal.

I read through this entire book of schlock hoping beyond hope that the ending would justify the stupidity - that Thomas had been in some sort of coma and manipulated by WICKED the entire time...but nope. WICKED just let him run around apparently to weed out more healthy people so they could send the best and the "smartest" through the portal.

If this is how Dashner thinks "smart" people would act, I can't imagine how he'd write stupid people.

The only theory I can come up with to justify all the brutality and stupidity in this book is that I'm explaining it to myself that everyone at WICKED (including the Chancellor) has the Flare and is seriously psycho.

Otherwise it makes no sense.

I honestly wish I had not read this book. I loved the first book, thought the second was decent, but am now so turned off by book three that I don't feel like I want to read the prequel. And Thomas? I can't stand the character now. I almost wish he'd been the one crushed by a rock at the end. Argh.

PS I am not one of those folks who hated the ending of Lost. While it was disappointing on an informational level, the ending of Lost - to me at least - was emotionally powerful and beautiful. Not the ending of The Maze Runner series. This was just written so it would look good on a big screen and the Maze could be destroyed with a lot of CGI special effects.

The Wild Truth, by Carine McCandless

A New York Times Bestseller

"The Wild Truth is an important book on two fronts: It sets the record straight about a story that has touched thousands of readers, and it opens up a conversation about hideous domestic violence hidden behind a mask of prosperity and propriety."–NPR.org

The spellbinding story of Chris McCandless, who gave away his savings, hitchhiked to Alaska, walked into the wilderness alone, and starved to death in 1992, fascinated not just New York Times bestselling author Jon Krakauer, but also the rest of the nation. Krakauer's book,Into the Wild, became an international bestseller, translated into thirty-one languages, and Sean Penn's inspirational film by the same name further skyrocketed Chris McCandless to global fame. But the real story of Chris’s life and his journey has not yet been told - until now. The missing pieces are finally revealed in The Wild Truth, written by Carine McCandless, Chris's beloved and trusted sister.  Featured in both the book and film, Carine has wrestled for more than twenty years with the legacy of her brother's journey to self-discovery, and now tells her own story while filling in the blanks of his. Carine was Chris's best friend, the person with whom he had the closest bond, and who witnessed firsthand the dysfunctional and violent family dynamic that made Chris willing to embrace the harsh wilderness of Alaska. Growing up in the same troubled household, Carine speaks candidly about the deeper reality of life in the McCandless family. In the many years since the tragedy of Chris's death, Carine has searched for some kind of redemption. In this touching and deeply personal memoir, she reveals how she has learned that real redemption can only come from speaking the truth.

“A moving and revelatory saga.” (Boston Globe)

“The Wild Truth is a moving narrative of domestic abuse, grief and survival, and for the perspective and revelations it contains, an essential additon to the Into the Wild story.” (Newsweek)

“Fiercely honest and gripping. . . . She honestly shares her successes and failures in work and relationships as she comes to the realization that she has tried to find in adult life what was lacking in her childhood: worth, strength, and unconditional love.” (Publishers Weekly)

“The Wild Truth is an important book on two fronts: It sets the record straight about a story that has touched thousands of readers, and it opens up a conversation about hideous domestic violence hidden behind a mask of prosperity and propriety.” (NPR.org)

“Helping her readers become more familiar with the overwhelming burdens caused by dysfunctional parents is one of The Wild Truth’s major achievements. [McCandless] touches each of us…[we] have a better sense of what drove her brother and compelled her to write about her own harrowing history.” (Anchorage Press)

“Powerful . . . gripping to read.” (Examiner.com)

“A powerful book…For me, reading it was like finding a crucial missing word in the middle of a crossword puzzle: once those letters were filled in, the answers to the blank spaces around them also cascaded into place.” (Eva Holland, Vela Magazine)

Through a tumultuous childhood, the McCandless siblings clung to each other amidst a chaotic home life, forming a lifelong bond and an unbreakable trust. So when Chris abandoned nearly all of his possessions, cut off all family ties, and forged an anonymous existence on the road, Carine understood what drew Chris away from all he had known. Although the writing is clunky and at times overwrought, the central purpose of this book is the much-needed insight into the incredibly damaging environment in which the 2 youngest McCandless kids were raised. I think the abusive environment made it very easy for Chris to cut off all contact in an attempt to define himself as a man separate from Walt. He did the extraordinary (abandoning his formerly materially-comfortable life for a meagre existence) because he was from an extra-ordinary situation. The very foundation of the second McCandless family was built on a lie, and that which is a lie cannot stand, it may take a few decades but it will fall. The core of the second family, which was Chris and Carine, seem more damaged than the first family (the other 6 kids) probably because of the persistently detrimental effects of living full time with two incredibly personality-disordered people. We don’t get much insight into the other mother, but it seems the very act of separating from Walt and claiming her own life and dignity back made a huge difference on the older kids. They all seem to be successful and ‘normal’ in a way that Chris and Carine are not. Perhaps their mother was not as nuts. Walt and Billie were so wrapped up in themselves and their dynamic drama that real parenting seemed to take a back seat. What little energy was left after trying to kill each other or the kids was spent on their careers and ‘looking good’ to the community. They are almost textbook narcissists.
Carine is not the easiest person to like; there are shades of her mother’s willfulness and self-righteousness in her actions, and she can seem more self-absorbed than self-reflective. Because she and Chris lost contact just at the point his story gets interesting, she can offer little insight into the man he was becoming, she can only reveal the boy he was.

A Very Sad Story
By Angel La Canfora
I have mixed feelings about The Wild Truth. It starts off with a bang. Right away, she's at her childhood home and declares, "I f$&#* hate this house." And I thought, "OK, we're in for some raw, unbridled honesty here." But that kind of forthright bluntness becomes muted as she takes on a more formal tone, in an attempt to write "literary."

Carine has my sympathy. Her life hasn't been easy and to live with constant reminder's of her brother's legacy and tragic end has got to be painful. But I wished the book would've kept its focus on Chris. This book is really about Carine's journey, her relationship with her parents, Chris, her siblings and her ex-lovers. She spends a great deal of time uncomfortably justifying and defending her own life and legacy, as she continually pats herself on the back or holds herself up as a pillar for us all to emulate. She just skirts the edges of sanctimony, never quite going over the edge. The writing is clunky, phrases such as "email missives" when just "email" would've worked are peppered throughout the book. I found myself skimming whole passages where she went into great detail about something like her daughter playing with, uh, a ribbon, I think, I don't know, I checked out at that part.

What really redeemed the book, for me, was strictly personal. There were scenes and recountings of conversations with Walt and Billie that were note-for-note perfect for ones I experienced with my own family that made me gasp. Plus, I've been fascinated by Chris' story for years, as I've felt he's a kindred spirit. I, too, have wandered around in nature, alone, searching, drinking in the peace.

I think this book will be interesting to anyone who has survived an abusive childhood or to those who are Christopher McCandless completists. Don't expect to be spellbound or to be absorbed in a book of great literary merit. Don't expect to learn too much about Chris' story, either. Take it for what it is: A very sad story told by a woman who has survived hardship and who seems to still be coming to terms with it all.

The rest of the story.

I read Into The Wild years ago and was blown away by the story. In 2011, I accepted a summer job in Denali and heard several times about the magic bus that coworkers would hike out to for overnight camping. In the stories, I heard negative comments about Chris McCandless, that he didn't know what he was doing. I never made the hike to the bus and deep down always wondered what really happened. Finding The Wild Truth, I picked it up and never stopped reading.
No longer a mystery, the back story has been shared, gut wrenching and honest, Carine shares the truth about the 'perfect' family. Thank you for sharing The Wild Truth
