Brave Questions was as insightful as it was eye-opening. As you read through and engage in the questions you quickly realize how superficial your day to day conversations have become. This is a great tool to deepen your relationships whether it is at home, at work or at play. Dr. Zimmerman has really captured the essence of what it takes to continue to grow your relationships no matter what stage of life you are in. It's a must read!

A Solid Sanskrit Grammar

This is probably the best all-round textbook for learning Sanskrit. Its closest
competitors are Goldman's "Devavanipraveshika" and Coulson's "Teach Yourself
Sanskrit". Maurer's work improves upon both in several ways: 1.It treats Sanskrit
in its Indo-European linguistic context, which will be a reason that many will
come to the study of the language. Previously Mayrhofer's "Sanskrit Grammar" or
Burrow's "Sanskrit Language", neither of which are pedagogic, had to be consulted
by a student interested in historical linguistics. 2.It presents the basic
grammar thoroughly with plentiful vocabulary and practice material for the
beginner. The reasons that prevent me from giving it five stars are these:
1. Price 2. Somewhat uninspired selection of readings. After all, with the
largest world literature, Maurer could have done better than relying on the old war-horse of "Nala and Damayanti", which continues the tradition of
Lanman's "Sanskrit Reader" of a century ago. Goldman, based as it is on the
"Ramayana" excels in this respect, as does Coulson which builds up to an
appreciation of Kalidasa. Few students these days will be satisfied with the
soupy Nala tale when the Bhagavad Gita, the Kama Sutra, the Upanishads and so
many more can be read in its place. Nonetheless, this is a highly recommended book for those who want a sensible, traditional grammar.

Best book for beginners

I teach Sanskrit in Canada, and I've tried using many different textbooks. My goal is to give the student a basic overview of the major components of Sanskrit as quickly as possible, and teach further using authentic Sanskrit literature. This book does exactly that. Instead of teaching grammar topics in the conventional order, it introduces advanced topics right at the beginning in a simplified way, so that students get used to recognizing their usage in context. It also has more thorough explanations of grammar topics than any book I've seen, and uses familiar English examples for comparison. excellent primer

i've been studying sanskrit on my own for 25 years and i own about a half dozen primers. this is an excellent primer, lots of useful charts and information. the pace of the lessons is reasonable for beginners, though wish the translation exercises were worked out maybe at the back of the book so student could check his/her work. two non-content problems: at $65 it's too pricey, and because of the number of pages (ca 850) the binding is thick and it's hard to keep the book open when working the exercises.

I love this series!!

First introduced in Last To Know, both Sadie and Ezra have both appeared in the previous two books and now have got their own story to tell.
When their best friends, Maddox and Emma, began dating these two were the spare wheels in that relationship. As they spent time with one another, they became close until eventually the two were best friends. When Sadie begins dating Braden and eventually becomes engaged to him, she chooses him over Ezra, only to be left running to Ezra when Braden doesn't turn out to be who she expected him to be.
As Sadie moves on from her relationship with Braden, her and Ezra pick up right where they left off and decided to make their friendship a bit more and added the benefits to it. What can go wrong? A lot! And when it all comes to the boiling point, Ezra and Sadie have to decide if their friendship can be salvaged and where they go from here.
As with Last To Know and Never Too Late, Micalea Smeltzer crafts a wonderful story of friendship, some angst, and love. What would the Willow Creek relationships be like without a little angst thrown in to the mix? These boys have to work for their girls! I've loved all the Willow Creek boys so far, Ezra included. I really like the relationship between Sadie and Ezra and think Smeltzer best described it with the line "Our relationship was intense, passionate, and full of fun." I love that they can laugh and have fun with one another and it's not all serious, all the time.
Maddox and Mathias along with their girls Emma and Remy return for the fun. Maddox still holds a special place in my heart and I love this kid with his diet Pepsi obsession and his love for knitting, Emma, and his pet hedgehog. In the one scene where Hayes is demanding someone go get Maddox his knitting bag to settle him down and then as Maddox started knitting booties, I couldn't help but laugh. I loved the little moments between Mathias and Remy also and how Mathias is such a protective daddy to be. Previously introduced to Hayes, another member of the band, we get a closer look at him in order to prepare for the next book which is his story and includes a character we were just introduced to in In Your Heart - Arden. Arden is a single mom who works for Sadie. It sounds like she has a story just begging to be told. By the way, I loved Hayes' interaction with Arden's daughter Mia.
Back to the couple at hand though - Sadie and Ezra had a connection that readers can tell from the start is going to lead to some good times between these two. They have a sweet but passionate relationship and I loved seeing all the fun times between them along with the sweet ones. I especially loved what Ezra does for Sadie towards the end - no spoilers though ;)
I truly love this series and cannot wait for the next book. Thankfully it's not too long of a wait. I love the Willow Creek family!

I Want to Be in This World!

The Willow Creek series has quickly grown to be one of my favorite series and just as I was for the last book, I was super excited for this one to come out, especially because of the little sneak peek in Never Too Late. And thanks to the incredible author behind this book, I was able to receive an ARC and read it early.

Sadie and Ezra are an interesting couple to say the least. They are both very different characters unlike Maddox and Emma, who were both cheerful or Mathias and Remy, who were more broken. Ezra was a very enigmatic male lead in the best way possible. Sadie was a little more quirky and complex, but as usually Micalea Smeltzer made it work. Since these two weren't meeting for the first time, it was a little awkward at first because they were already really close and it felt like there was a huge gap that was missing. And because of this, a few times during the book, I didn't really see their connection and attraction. But when I did, the sparks flew out of the page. I don't think a lot of authors could have pulled off putting characters like Sadie and Ezra together, but in this book, it worked.

The plot line, like the couple was also interesting. A lot of it was Sadie and Ezra going back and forth about their feelings for each other, which is very understandable and realistic. There were times though it felt a little bit repetitive and that made me slightly skim through the next few pages trying to get to something new. But since this is Micalea Smeltzer we're talking about, she found a way to add something to this book and the next one. And that something was Hayes. Hayes was such a awesome guy in the book and I'm glad that we got to know him a little. The little scenes with him, Arden and Mia were adorable, and it made me so excited for his story.

"Mathias left just as Hayes returned with the last bag. And by bag I meant cage. Maddox and Emma brought their pet hedgehogs. I wished I was joking,"
Now aside from Sadie and Ezra, my favorite thing about this book was the humor. It literally made me laugh out loud and it brightened up my mood. From drunk Sadie to hedgehogs vacationing, I loved it all. Even if I had ended up hating the entire story, I would have given it the stars for the humor.

So overall, I didn't enjoy this book as much as the others, but I still did like it and I do recommend reading it. And props to Micalea for giving us some Olivia and Trace. And of course Toby.

I love the Willow Creek Series

I love the Willow Creek Series! Probably one of my favorite series, and now In Your Heart is my favorite book of the series.
It starts off with Sadie catching her fiancé sleeping with another women in their bed two weeks before their wedding. Understandably she gets upset and leaves the cheating bastard. She ends up calling her best friend Ezra the bass player of Willow Creek to come to her rescue. She slowly tries to bring her life back together while also dealing with the inappropriate feelings she has for her best friend. Reading this story makes you wish you had a best friend like Ezra.
This story is funny, sexy, memorable, and tugs at your heartstrings. I love that we got to see more of the Willow Creek band members and see where they are now. I can’t wait for the next book and find out more of the Willow Creek boys.

Does help in understanding Derrida

If you have trouble understanding Derrida, this will help. Just keep in mind that there is no logical consistency to his writings nor any rational underpinning. I studied Derrida in a grad philosophy class many years ago and could not see that there was any substance to his work at all. Although this book tends to be neutral/friendly to Derrida, it unintentionally supports my previous experience.

My personal opinion is that Derrida is intentionally obtuse to hide the lack of substance in his works. Derrida desperately wanted to be seen as an intellectual after a host of academic failures. He succeeded to some extent but as he grew older more and more people slowly started to realize that there was nothing there.

A Thorough Presentation of the Benefits of Event Processing

Much of my work involves integration of mainframe and web applications, and I originally chose this book to get an overview of the advantages that Event Processing might provide for sharing information across diverse platforms. While it has proven to be a comprehensive guide to Event Processing, the primary benefit I've gained from it so far has been a completely unexpected breakthrough in the redesign of a large legacy COBOL system. Our past attempts to modernize this system employed standard SOA techniques, breaking the functions into separate modules but leaving the data flow basically unchanged. It was this book which helped us to realize that it was not just the monlolithic nature of the programs that made this system cumbersome, but also the tight coupling and interdependence of the functions, even in modular form. By employing the Event Processing Network concept, we redefined the pieces of our cycle as complex events, with both synchronous and asynchronous aspects to the processing. The resulting design promises sufficient benefits in both maintenance and daily operation to justify the rewrite. The book also aided in getting approval for the system renovation, by helping some of the non-IT managers to better understand the business advantages inherent in the new design.

While much of the material presented in this book is common sense after you've read it, it helps to see it laid out clearly and explained in a way that everyone can understand. In our case, the thorough coverage pointed out an application of Event Processing that we had completely overlooked.

"Must Read" for any modern IT professional

For the longest time, Prof. Luckham's "Power of Events" was the only book available written by a well known professor in the field. Much has happened since 2002 in this field, and now Prof. Chandy has released this much updated volume with the help of Mr. Schulte from the Gartner Group. This collaboration, which blends the academic view with that of an analyst gives this book a very down to earth flavor - practical applications temper theoretical considerations. This is NOT a nuts-and-bolts book on how to program for Event Processing; however, this book admirably achieves its goal of educating any level of IT professional or manager about Events, Event Streams, Complex Event Processing and Event Driven Architectures (all buzz words that get thrown around in this industry). You will come away with a solid understanding of what these terms mean, and why they are important to you. Practical applications range from simple RFID based location, to Fraud Detection to solving world-wide shortages, as this book shows. It's a fairly quick read for the busy IT manager, and well worth the while.

Good Explanation of Events but Lacks Information on Software Products and Languages

This book is an overview, covering basic principles, vocabulary and best practices for application design. Pros: it's a good way to get started and a nice description of Event Processing (EP), Complex Event Processing (CEP) and how EP systems are designed. It explains how EP helps a business and positions EP with respect to other aspects of IT such as BPM, Rules Engines, SOA and Business Intelligence. Cons: It does not cover the commercial software products - there is nothing here about specific vendors and products. Also, it does not compare and contrast event processing languages - it gives a couple of language examples but not enough to tell me which language to use for a particular application. Overall, I'd recommend this book to someone who wants to understand what events are and how event processing systems work. However, a hands-on software developer will have to find detailed information on implementation elsewhere.

Great find

Hi Amazoners!

I played for 7 years like many onceler instrumentalists. From 6th grade until the end of the high school years. But of course, life happened and I stopped. Playing my flute was something I enjoyed, so I picked it up again as a hobby seriously almost 2 years ago. I have had a few performances at church but I quickly bored with some pieces and wanted more intermediate to advanced pieces. But in order to get my fingers and eyes ready for the technical aspects, i needed more practice. So, I ordered the elementary, intermediate, and advanced books at the same time.

I was excited to see my books arrive so quickly since now live outside the U.S. So for fun, I picked up the intermediate and advanced books first to to see if I could tackle it. But I quickly realized I needed a good review. So now, I am moving through the elementary level book. I am moving through it fast, but with better accuracy, and tone quality. I'm married, in my 30's, I work, and have 2 elementary aged children. These Rubank books are a good challenge for my schedule. (just what i wanted! :)The book is thick and well bounded with plenty of opportunities for growth. This was a wonderful find for the price! You won't regret it.

I started flute as an older adult as I near retirement. I figured it would help my cognitive function and be a great hobby. My teacher recommended these books (vol. 1 and 2)and have served as the foundation of my study. I love using this book because it covers everything in a systematic way: keys, fingerings, scales, solos, and duets. Each section of study uses the same key so there is thorough grounding in each key before one moves on. I enjoy the duets especially and find the exercises tuneful enough to be like music. This is not the only book I use so I have enough variety to keep from being bored.

My daughter's teacher, who is highly regarded, recommended this book for her studies. My daughter has had private lessons since grade 5 (she is now in grade 9) and plays well, certainly very well for a student, so I do think this is an advanced book.

Back in print at last, this 1959 book gives the lesser-known Gershwin brother (the one who wrote "the words") a chance not only to see his lyrics for such songs as "Embraceable You," "Someone to Watch over Me," and 102 others stand on their own, but also to tell the classic showbiz stories behind each one. Sometimes these take the form of name-dropping personal anecdotes, and sometimes they're accounts of peculiar lyric challenges and how he solved them. Gershwin reveals that the original "dummy" lyric for the tricky "I Got Rhythm" was "Roly-Poly/ Eating solely/ Ravioli/ Better watch your diet or bust." Either as showbiz memoir or pure poetry, Gershwin's book is a delight.

If this book had consisted just in the reprinting of the great lyrics Ira Gershwin wrote then it already would be a treasure. But it also contains his descriptions of how he wrote the songs, and is filled with stories of his long- song- writing career. He comes across as a decent, family- person somewhat reserved but basically a very , fine human being.

There are many trivial and forgettable lyrics here. But these are cancelled out by being among some of the greatest popular song lyrics ever written.

Perhaps the lyricist is almost absolutely dependent on the quality of the ' melody' in order to have his words become memorable as part of a great song.

Ira Gershwin in this was fortunate enough to work with some of the greatest of all writers of popular song, first of course and above all his brother, George.

As I write this I am humming the melody of the Gershwins' classic " Embraceable you".

How much pleasure and delight did these two great brothers give, and how much do they still give, to the world.

If you know the lyrics, you know George Gershwin's brother was a witty and warm-hearted writer of verses. His prose paints a self-portrait of a somewhat reserved, witty, erudite, unpretentious man who deeply loves (now, loved) his family, his friends, and his profession of lyric-writing. The stories behind the songs sketch a picture of show-biz life of the 1920s, before everybody had stereo systems; when anybody middle class or richer had a piano in the house; and when parties necessitated a piano recital from anybody willing and able to give one, as Ira's virtuoso brother usually was. Brief snapshots of life with his brother are shot through with almost heartbreaking poignancy as one recalls that George died young. The poignancy and his love for his brother shine the brighter as Ira never explicitly calls attention to them -- he shows, he doesn't tell. A beautiful book, with many droll observations & humorous anecdotes wittily told.

The One Essential Gershwin Book

Although Ira Gershwin was capable of lyric sloppiness -- you'd have to rate his work a tick lower overall than that of Cole Porter, Johnny Mercer, Yip Harburg, Alan Jay Lerner and Stephen Sondheim -- at his best his lyrics sparkle. In LYRICS ON SEVERAL OCCASIONS, Ira wittily sets the conditions that lead to some of his best work. For the most part he wisely allows the words to speak for themselves, grouping his lyrics under charmingly appropriate headings and occasionally describing why one works (or doesn't) and what it took to get there. It's both a delightful compendium of Ira's best songs and a crash course in lyric writing that may make you wish the late Mr. Gershwin had conducted classes to aspiring song-writers.

Must have for any tox student

My only complaint for this book is the lack of chemical equations but beyond that this book is absolutely wonderful. I discovered it accidentally while doing an assignment from the Google preview and knew I should have it to prepare for my qualifying exams. It has all the classic toxic agents, gives history of them, and the explanations for the mechanisms are simple, easy to understand and quite detailed. And when a toxicant has multi-system effects he references them for you, so it's easy to keep track. He also provides his sources for further reading at the end of the chapter. I love this book!
