I love this author.I think many that can never seem to accomplish anything,likely have this spirit.Powerful deliverance book.I am disappointed that my copy is missing 2 pages,but,doe not reflect the power of this book.Also,seems,it take so long for items to ship,but,again,not the fault of the author.I have 2 other of his books.Most powerful deliverance book,I have ever seen.Waiting for about 7 other of his books to come in the mail.This man is on fire for Jesus Christ.The absolute best books I have ever seen on deliverance.

How To Make Movies, Good Movies

Shaw said, "Those who can, do; those who can't, teach." In a strange way, Alexander Mackendrick fits both sides of that dictum. "Sandy" Mackendrick was an accomplished film director. After having worked in advertising, he started making films for the British Government during World War II. After the war he wrote scripts and he began directing. For the Ealing Studios, he made _Whiskey Galore!_, _The Man in the White Suit_, and _The Ladykillers_. Then he came to Hollywood, where he made the wonderfully biting _Sweet Smell of Success_. He could direct fine movies, and he did; but then he slipped into the "can't do" category, not for any lack of talent, but because he was not much of a deal-maker, and resented having to negotiate details with the studios. He started teaching, becoming dean of the film school at the California Institute of the Arts in 1969. He continued teaching until his death in 1993, but now filmmakers and audiences can get a glimpse of what he taught, in _On Film-making: An Introduction to the Craft of the Director_ (Faber and Faber). It is a sampling of his lecture handouts, some illustrated by his own sketches, that he delivered to students over the years, and shows the richness of his thinking on the surprising complexities of artistic decisions regarding even simple shoots on tiny films. Those who enjoy movies, but don't know much about how they are made, will be astonished at how many details of technique the director has to consider before anyone yells "Action!" Those who make movies, or want to, could not do better than to study what Mackendrick has to say.

Mackendrick emphatically agrees with Truffaut, who in his interview book with Hitchcock wrote, "Whatever is _said_ instead of being _shown_ is lost on the viewer." (One of Mackendrick's many slogans: "Movies SHOW... and then TELL.") Always, regard to the audience is paramount: "Try to tell the story while always remembering that the audience has somewhere better to go and something better to do." Like a good storyteller, use curiosity, expectation, and suspense to keep them buttonholed. The reader of this book will want to be familiar with certain films to which Mackendrick returns again and again, like _The Third Man_ or _On the Waterfront_, but not all the cinema is fine cinema. In a chapter titled "Plausibility and Willing Suspension of Disbelief," he discusses the sci-fi film _Them!_ which he says is a "piece of nonsense" but shows solid, simple plot mechanisms, and follows the rule that "we are allowed only one major Incredible Thing" (Giant ants are invading!) while "everything else in the story should actually be logical, even over-logical." There is rich advice about dealing with actors. A student who asked, "How does a director get an actor to do what he wants?" took Mackendrick off guard, as he had never asked the question in those terms. It's the wrong question. "You don't," came the eventual answer, "You try to get the actor to want what you need."

Mackendrick knows you can't teach the art and inspiration that directors have to have intuitively, though there is a useful chapter titled "A Technique for Having Ideas." The craft involved in direction, though, has a possibility of being taught, and he has here covered the craft from scriptwriting through editing. I only sit in audiences for films (and the intimidating muster of factors Mackendrick brings up that the director must consider tells me I am in the right spot in front of the screen, not behind the camera), but I have a much better appreciation for what a director does after reading these fine instructions. I also wish that every director now working would simply follow these rules. The principles here, if followed universally, would benefit directors, audiences, and the quality of Hollywood's output, not to mention its bottom line.

One of the very best books on filmmaking

I have read many books on filmmaking and I have a film school degree (from CalArts, as it happens, where Mackendrick once taught). You can't learn filmmaking from a book or from school, only by making films. Nevertheless, "On Film-making" comes as close as any book I've ever found to explaining precisely and beautifully the work of a film director. Whether you want to make films or are simply a film fan, this book will be an immensely rewarding and illuminating experience.

A great book for writers, not just directors

I've got over fifty books dealing with all types of writing (screen, novels, TV), and this is one of only a handful I consider truly essential. The first half of the book examines screenplays. Most books on filmmaking give only a cursory glance at the screenplay, but we writers know that the screenplay is the most important part of the film, don't we!

Mackendrick is one of an elite group of filmmakers who excelled in both screenwriting and directing. His insights are profound. His "writer's wall" quotes are equal to the entire content of many other books on screenwriting.

Mackendrick is basically the bridge between classical and modern cinematic writing. He emphasises that what is going to happen NEXT, as opposed to what is happening NOW, is the core of good storytelling. He also teaches that the preparatory period before a significant event AND the after effects of that event are equally or more dramatically significant than the actual event itself (as demonstrated by a movie like Reservoir Dogs). Mackendrick's book is one of the few which covers such advanced concepts as negative action, activity versus action, and plot density. The only area I don't agree with him is his dislike of flashbacks (although he has valid reasons).

I judge a book by how many notes I take when reading it. I took a lot of notes when reading this one. Now go and buy it!

One of the best volumes in the series, fully lived up to my expectations.

Considered the conclusion to the first major story arc of the Fables saga, WAR AND PIECES tells of the long-expected confrontation between the free Fables and the Adversary. This is where the story from the very beginning has been heading, so needless to say there was a lot of build-up and expectations for this one. I think it says a lot that this volume has a 4.5-star rating here on Amazon, despite its being subject to such high hopes by faithful readers. Most of your favorite characters are featured on center stage here, including Boy Blue, Bigby, Prince Charming, and Cindy. As you'd expect, this one is absolutely full of action, action, and more action, and compared to other Fables volumes, lacks a bit on the character development side of things. Still, a few personal interactions are highlighted here, including the potentially-budding(?) romance between Boy Blue and Rose Red. Besides that though, the rest of the book tells action-packed stories of the 'shooting war' with the Adversary. Unlike some of the other reviewers, I was totally satisfied by the way the war was detailed and the way it turned out. Somewhat predictable, but a joy to read. Fully lived up to my expectations (which were high). As far as I'm concerned, this would have been a perfectly reasonable place to conclude the series, but I'm obviously glad it has continued. Highly recommended!

A glorious ending to the FABLES main arc

Before commencing with my review, I have to note that FABLES could well become the next TRUE BLOOD. The latter is the highly successful HBO television series, which adapted the wonderful Sookie Stackhouse novels by Charlaine Harris for the small screen. About a month before I write this ABC put a new television series based on FABLES into production. The people in charge of the production and pilot are the people behind the interesting but unsuccessful series SIX DEGREES. Hopefully the pilot will thrill and enchant the top brass at ABC and FABLES will become a primetime series on ABC. I have to confess that at the moment I have a hatred for ABC that is deep and strong, due to their almost unforgivable cancellation of PUSHING DAISIES, but a TV series based on FABLES would go a long way towards making me forgive them.

WAR AND PIECES pretty much brings us to the point that we always knew that FABLES would reach, the war between the Fables and the Adversary. From the very first issue any perceptive reader knew that this moment would come. What is somewhat surprising is that the series will not cease with the resolution of the war. But just as some friends of mine refuse to watch individual episodes of either LOST or 24, preferring instead to watch them in one big chunk on DVD, so I refrain from getting the individual issues of FABLES, instead buying each collected volume. So I won't know what happens next until next August when the 12th volume in the series is published. Meanwhile, Willingham's FABLES has become quite the franchise. Not only is there the possible new ABC series, there are a couple of spin offs in the offing, including a Peter Piper series and a miniseries involving that wonderful superspy Cinderella. The fifth volume of JACK OF FABLES has had its publication date announced, even before the fourth volume has been published. So, even if the main FABLES comic were not to continue (though it is), it seems certain that it will be a long, long time before we are without new comics based upon the FABLES universe.

This was just a glorious set of stories. There is always the danger when anticipating the end to a major story arc that it will be disappointing. These were just a delightful series of issues. We'd had a brief taste earlier of Cinderella as a super spy and it was delightful to have her reprise that guise. On a mission to retrieve an all-important package at the southern tip of South America we get to see her in all her unexpected glory. Some of the things we see various Fables do are wonderfully congruous with what we already knew about them, but the whole idea of Cinderella as a Jane Bond character is so out of whack with everything else we know about her to be delightful, not unlike Goldilocks as a murderous and slutty rogue. Then the actual war is wonderfully inventive. Using magic carpets as ballast to keep a wooden ship airborne seems very much like something the Fables would do. And the heroic demise of the unceasingly selfish Prince Charming is delightfully out of character. As with all the previous FABLES books, this one is filled with endless surprises and unanticipated twists. It is all so very good that even though it would have been a natural place to bring the entire series to a close, I'm quite delighted that Willingham decided not to.

Except for SANDMAN, this has to be my all time favorite comic series. It is exceptional for getting better and better as it has gone along. Early on I felt that some of the volumes were somewhat hampered for attempting to emulate one or another genre (for instance, the first volume was a whodunit, and all the weaker for that). But it really has ceased imitating other genres and found its own voice. I hope that we are a long, long way from the end. Hopefully by the time that Vol. 12 is published in August 2009, we will have heard that ABC has pulled the trigger on a FABLES TV series.

The One in Which the War Concludes: And Boy, Is This A Grand Climax!

Others have posted in detail about the basis for the series and the segments of this volume, so I'm gonna skip the spoilers.

I will say this: It's all been leading up to this big, final series of espionage adventures and world-spanning battles. We see how the war is won...and by whom. It's satisfying and it's exciting and it's sad, too.

This is my fave ongoing comic book series, bar none. It's been hard waiting for the bound paperbacks (rather than reading one issue at a time), but it's always worth it. This series is well-written, well-drawn, and always full of twisty, folklorish-retelling fun.

Boy blue shines here (although he's not having an easy time of it in more ways than one), as does Prince Charming (whether you've loved or hated his complex, conceited, but courageous self). Cinderella, er, I mean "Cindy," is kickbutt great as she does her wicked-good spy thing! The battle strategies are fun to follow. And the showdown between the Big Bad Emperor and one of my fave Fable characters ends with a lovely humorous twist. :)

If you're not familiar with the series--start with #1. Really. This storyline is not going to satisfy properly unless you follow the story from chapter one. It's a great ride, and you want to start from "Go!"

Now that the arc of the war series is done, I am crazy curious to see where the saga goes next. (And I keep hoping to hear more about Frau Totenkinder and her mysterious witchy ways, as well as more about all of the thirteenth floor's sorcerous inhabitants.)

This series deserves every award it's gotten. Thumbs way up!

About the Author
Steven A. Riess (Ph.D. U. of Chicago, 1974) formerly the Bernard Brommel Distinguished Research Professor in the Department of History at Northeastern Illinois University is the author of several books, three of which were cited by CHOICE as "Outstanding Academic Books". Other awards include the Webb-Smith Prize and fellowships from the National Endowment for the Humanities. Among the founding members of the North American Society for Sport History, he edited the Journal of Sport History from 1985 to 1992.

Gives legitimacy to the study of American sports

First a word about the "Major Problems" line: it is designed to be a text in college history courses. Each chapter is divided into two parts: 1) Primary sources 2) Two or three scholarly articles (usually written by an expert in the field). Each source or article is designed to act as a springboard for classroom discussion lead by the professor. In all, I like the format of the line of books and enjoyed it when a professor assigned it as a text. I'm so nerdy, in fact, that I've bought a couple books from the "Major Problems" lines to read for pleasure. This particular title in the series was compiled by a former professor of mine, Steven Riess. He succeeds in putting together a series of documents that enlighten, challenge opinions and, in all, provide a wealth of information while leaving no clear cut answers. Favorites include essays on why sports were restricted in colonial New England (because of religions reasons or for practical/safety reasons?), the interview with Muhammad Ali, and Chapter 14: The Business of Sport (highlighting the benefits, drawbacks and inside deals involved in big money major leagues). Riess also succeeds in giving legitimacy to the study of sport--think of all the money spent on tickets, all the air time, advertisements, etc. that are involved in modern sports. Sports IS a major part of American society and Riess helps to present its rich history and evolution. This is a college text book--not something one would take to the park with them on a Sunday afternoon to read under a tree, but this was not Riess' intention. Clearly, he hit the mark he was aiming for.

Very good for young adult to learn about sport

An in-depth look into the psychology and sociology of sports throughout many decades of historical times. Learn from different researchers, the ways in which there is racial centrality in baseball, and premeditated stereotypes regarding football, take effect and helped shape the modern day era of sports we are living in today. Take a deep dive into the world of the 1920's-1950's, where segregation was a real and cruel world where sports was an outlet for the youth to take out their energy on.

It thoroughly examines a wide variety of systems—from transistor switches to industrial robots—and discusses such issues as the economic importance and/or environmental impact of the production process. Because the author adopts the logical view that things will go wrong in any real system, he ensures that students have plenty of opportunities throughout the book to determine probable causes and corrections for system failures. The "Troubleshooting on the job" section is a critical component of every chapter. Discussion has been expanded on the topic of electrical and magnetic noise in electronic measurement/transmission systems, and on shielding techniques for coping with it. The current-loop approach to signal transmission is explained and contrasted with voltage transmission. Some of the PLC program logic of this book is moderately complex, representative of actual industrial control processes; this is unlike the artificially simple logic o f other industrial texts. In the fifth edition such coverage is pushed further yet; to include program branching and subroutine applications.

The capabilities of industrial manufacturing systems have expanded at a startling rate since the first edition of Modern Industrial Electronics was published in 1979. Part of the new capability has to do with more precise control over machines and processes, and part has to do with our greater ability to measure and make records of production variables. This expansion has two direct effects on you. First, it makes your work more demanding. Second, it gives you the opportunity for even greater satisfaction and personal reward, because anyone who can learn and master today's high-technology industrial controls is sought after by employers. As a technician or engineering technologist working in modern industry, you are a member of a select group, indispensable to your company's productivity and profitability. In fact, your work contribution has obvious impact on our entire society's productivity and economic security. What a compliment to you that you are entrusted with that responsibility.

In this fifth edition, as in the previous four editions that your predecessors used to launch their careers, I have made every effort to help you reach the skill level needed for carrying out your job responsibilities. Toward that goal, this edition features a "Troubleshooting on the Job" exercise at the end of every chapter. These troubleshooting exercises require you to apply the knowledge that you have gained from that chapter to solve a problem. By carrying out the troubleshooting exercises individually or as a team, you will find yourself exercising your technical understanding, thinking imaginatively, and solving realistic problems—in other words, making the transition from classroom student to on-the-job technician or technologist in the industrial arena.

FEATURES OF THE TEXT Chapter-Opening Photograph

Each chapter begins with a photograph and explanatory caption that depicts some modern industrial practice. Figure A shows the opening pages of Chapter 17. Use these presentations to get a feel for some of the interesting opportunities and work responsibilities in the field of industrial electronics. Descriptive captions and credits for the photographs are listed on page vii.

Objectives

The first edition, published in 1979, was the original college technology textbook that explicitly stated the learning objectives at the beginning of each chapter. That precedent is continued, naturally, in this fifth edition. As you are reading and studying, try to perform the task that each objective calls for. If you can perform these tasks, then you are learning what the book and the course have to offer. If you find that you cannot satisfy the objectives, ask further questions in class or consult in private with your instructor.

Troubleshooting on the Job

The final section of each chapter gives a "Troubleshooting on the Job" exercise that is representative of the duties that you will be performing when working as a technician or engineering aide. Figure B shows the Troubleshooting on the Job in Chapter 6, from pages 242-243, which requires you to devise a procedure for testing and troubleshooting a large-scale electrostatic ash precipitator. These assignments invariably require you to use the knowledge that you have learned from that chapter in an imaginative way. Your instructor may ask for your written or drawn solution to be done individually, or you may be placed in a two- or three-person team to work on the problem. Various solutions are possible in most cases; therefore you and others in the class will present your solutions to the entire class so that everyone can share the differing thoughts and approaches that were brought to bear on the problem.

Examples

When trying to understand new ideas, especially the use of new mathematical formulas, all people are helped by examples. In this text, examples are provided for all situations where numerical calculations are required.

Summary

At the end of each chapter, there is a list of the main ideas that were developed within that chapter. The chapter's mathematical formulas, if any, are also collected for your ready reference in solving the homework.

Questions and Problems

Numerous questions and problems, organized by chapter section, are provided to sharpen your understanding and exercise your problem-solving skills. Your instructor will assign some of them for homework. You may wish to tackle additional problems for your own satisfaction. The more you practice, the more you learn.

Glossary

Definitions of hundreds of terms used in industrial electronics are listed in the glossary. Most of these terms were introduced in this text, but some come from earlier course work in electricity and electronics. Had the book for a week and pages have already fallen out despite being new. I have a classmate that bought the book new, half of his book broke from the binding. He returned it, got another new one and it still lost pages. Terrible quality was put into printing these books.

Bad translation of a wonderful book

I do NOT like this translation!! This is one of my favorite books of all time. I bought a copy of this version for a friend, and didn't realize until I got it that it wasn't by the translator that I originally read. The language in this is so plain and uninspiring - so much of the depth and beauty of the book is lost in this version. If you're going to buy this book, make SURE you buy the one translated by M.D. Herter Norton!! I found out the hard way.

A book full of one of those best advices in "how to live?"

I'm a musician - the hastiness that I always felt when I trying to express my feelings is always a harsh and turbulent issue I have to dealt with everyday. And this is the book I seek for advices when I'm overwhelmed.

The first time I read this book is when I was seventeen. I'm twenty-six now, and the wise words of Rilke's still comfort me and aid me in my path of pursuing my own expressions. I don't know whether those words will fade eventually or lost their weight in the unpredictable and changeable future, but the gifts I'd received are already proven worthwhile.
