I don't even like stretching, but I love this book!
By David Lawrence
I love running, cross country skiing, hiking, whitewater canoeing and just about anything athletic and outside. But I don't like stretching. So for me to give a stretching book 5 stars really means something. The book deserves rave reviews because of three major accomplishments:

One - it takes a complex subject and explains it both simply (for guys like me) and with great detail (perfect for more advanced students and professionals).

Two - the book is organized in a way that makes finding the stretch you're looking for easy, and it is organized in a way that teaches you at the same time. I often find myself exploring and discovering new things even when I look up just one thing.

Three - the book is satisfying to the eyes and the mind. You could spend hours just looking at the fascinating pictures of the human body (think of the "Body Exhibit"). Or you could read the book through like a novel because of it's multiple layers of form and function.

If you're at all interested in better performance, specific sport stretching, improving your posture or owning a book that will entertain and enlighten you hour after hour, I can't recommend this book enough.

Look no further....
By D. M. Kennedy
Like many people who have participated in a variety of sports, over several decades of time, I have been exposed to countless opinions, theories, philosophies and anecdotes regarding both the benefits and the costs of stretching warm muscles and cold muscles. Turn over a rock and you find another expert or guru. I couldn't account for how much harm there is in all this variety, but I, for one, am very much relieved to have found Mr Armiger's exhaustive work on the subject of "Stretching... ". In my estimation, this is the most thorough and, hence, objective treatment of this subject; plus, the book is organized by muscle, by muscle group, by sport, etc. If my hip flexors are tender after a day of cross country skiing, this book is where I turn for answers and solutions. Definitely on the front row of my book shelf.

This book is invaluable if you want:
1) a practical guide for general or specific flexibility exercises,
2) an understanding of muscle physiology,
3) beautifully clear illustrations of anatomy,
4) a go-to guide for sports specific improved range of motion.

The authors and reviewers have made an excellent reference book for students, clinicians and athletes.

This textbook represents more than a decade of work. During this time, some material became obsolete and had to be deleted. In my days as a telecommunication engineer and a university professor, much has changed in the fields of data communications and computer networks. Nonetheless, this text covers both the foundations and the latest advanced topics of computer networking.

The Internet is a revolutionary communication vehicle by which we all conveniently communicate every day and do business with one another. Because of its complexities at both hardware and software levels, the Internet is a challenge to those who want to study this field. The growing number and variety of communication services offer obvious challenges for computer network experts in designing cost-effective networks to meet the requirements of emerging communication systems. This book fills the gaps in current available texts.

Objectives

This textbook offers a mix of theory, architecture, and applications. The lack of computer communications books presenting moderate analysis with detailed drawing figures covering both wireline and wireless communication technologies led me to write this book. The main objective of this book is to help readers learn the fundamentals and certain advance concepts of computer and communication networks, using a unified set of symbols throughout a single textbook. The preparation of this book responds to the explosive demand for learning computer communication science and engineering.

This book targets two groups of people. For people in academia, at both the undergraduate and graduate levels, the book provides a thorough design and performance evaluation of communication networks. The book can also give researchers the ability to analyze and simulate complex communication networks. For engineers who want to work in the communication and networking industry and need a reference covering various angles of computer networks, this book provides a variety of learning techniques: exercises, case studies, and computer simulation projects. The book makes it easy and fun for an engineer to review and learn from a reliable networking reference covering all the necessary concepts and performance models.

Organization of This Book

It would be impossible to cover all networking subjects in one textbook. The range of topics presented in this text, however, allows instructors to choose the topics best suited for their classes. Besides the explanations provided for each chapter, readers will learn how to model a communication network and how to mathematically analyze them. Readers of this text will benefit from the combination of theory and applications presented in each chapter, with the more theoretical portions of each chapter challenging those readers who are more ambitious. This book is organized into 20 chapters in two main parts as follows:

The ten chapters of Part I cover the fundamental topics in computer networking, with each chapter serving as a base for the following chapter. Part I of the book begins with an overview of networking, focusing on TCP/IP schemes, describing wireless networking, and ending with a discussion of the World Wide Web (WWW) and network security. Part I is most appropriate for readers with no experience in computer communications. The ten chapters in Part II cover detailed analytical aspects and a closer perspective of advanced networking protocols: switches, routers, multiplexers, delay and congestion analysis, multimedia networking, multicasting, data compression, voice over IP, optical networks, and sensor networks.

Chapter 1, Packet-Switched Networks, introduces computer networks, touching on the need for networks, explaining relevant packet-switched networks, and giving an overview of today's Internet. Fundamental concepts, such as messages, packets, and frames and packet switching versus circuit switching, are defined. Various types of packet-switched networks are defined, and how a message can be handled by either connection-oriented networks or connectionless networks is explained. Finally, this chapter presents a detailed analysis of packet size and optimizations.

Chapter 2, Foundation of Networking Protocols, presents the basics of the five-layer Internet Protocol reference model, as well as other protocols: the seven-layer OSI model and the equal-size packet protocol model.

Chapter 3, Networking Devices, introduces the overall architectures of networking devices, such as multiplexers, modems, and switching devices. Multiplexers are used in all layers of network. Networking modems are used for access to the Internet from remote and residential areas. Finally, switching devices, such as hubs, bridges, switches, and routers, are used to switch packets from one path to another.

Chapter 4, Data Links and Transmission, focuses on the links and transmission interfaces, the two basic components that networking starts with. This chapter presents both wired and wireless links and describes their characteristics, advantages, and channel access methods. This chapter also presents various error-detection and correction techniques at the link level and discusses the integrity of transmitted data. The chapter ends by presenting link-layer stop-and-wait and sliding-window flow control.

Chapter 5, Local Area Networks and Networks of LANs, explores the implementation of small networks, using the functional aspects of the fundamental knowledge gained in Chapters 2, 3, and Chapter 4 on basic protocols, devices, and links, respectively. The chapter provides some pointers for constructing a network with those devices and making connections, gives several examples of local area networks (LANs), and explains how such LANs are internetworked.

Chapter 6, Wireless Networks and Mobile IP, presents the basics of wireless networking. The chapter discusses challenges in designing a wireless network: management of mobility, network reliability, and frequency reuse. Next, the chapter presents an overview of wireless communication systems at all levels, from satellite to local-area networks and discusses wireless LANs and such standards as IEEE 802.11. The chapter then shifts to cellular networks, one of the main backbones of our wireless networking infrastructure. Mobile IP and Wireless mesh networks (WMNs), including WiFi and WiMAX technologies, are introduced at the end of this chapter.

Chapter 7, Routing and Internetworking, focuses on routing in wide area networks (WANs) and introduces related routing algorithms and protocols. Our networking infrastructure is clearly classified into those networks that use optimal routes and those that use nonoptimal routes. These two classes of algorithms are described in detail. Routing protocols are also classified as those that are applied within a domain and those that are applied beyond a domain. This chapter also presents congestion-control algorithms: network-congestion control and link-flow control. The chapter also looks at random early detection for congestion control and describes a useful technique to estimate the link-blocking probability.

Chapter 8, Transport and End-to-End Protocols, first looks at the basics of the transport layer and demonstrates how a simple file is transferred. This layer handles the details of data transmission. Several techniques for transmission control and protocol (TCP) congestion control are discussed. Next, congestion-avoidance methods, which are methods of using precautionary algorithms to avoid a possible congestion in a TCP session, are presented. The chapter ends with a discussion of methods of ATM congestion control. Chapter 9, Applications and Network Management, presents the fundamentals of the application layer, which determines how a specific user application should use a network. Among the applications are the Domain Name System (DNS); e-mail protocols, such as SMTP, and the World Wide Web (WWW).

Chapter 10, Network Security, focuses on security aspects of networks. After introducing network threats, hackers, and attacks, this chapter discusses encryption techniques: public-and private-key protocols, encryption standards, key-exchange algorithms, authentication methods, digital signature and secure connections, firewalls, IPsec, and security methods for virtual private networks.

Chapter 11, Packet Queues and Delay Analysis, begins Part II, discussing Little's theorem, Markov chain theorem, and birth and death processes. Queueing-node models are presented with several scenarios: finite versus infinite queueing capacity, one server versus several servers, and Markovian versus non-Markovian systems. Non-Markovian models are essential for many network applications, as multimedia traffic cannot be modeled by Markovian patterns. In addition, delay analysis, based on networks of queues, is discussed. Burke's theorem is applied in both serial and parallel queueing nodes. Jackson's theorem is presented for situations in which a packet visits a particular queue more than once, resulting in loops or feedback.

Chapter 12, Quality of Service and Resource Allocation, covers quality-of-service issues in networking. The two broad categories of QoS discussed are the integrated services approach, for providing service quality to networks that require maintaining certain features in switching nodes; and the differentiated services approach (DiffServ), which is based on providing quality-of-service support to a broad class of applications. These two categories include a number of QoS protocols and architectures, such as traffic shaping, admission control, packet scheduling, reservation methods, the Resource Reservation Protocol (RSVP), and traffic conditioner and bandwidth broker methods. This chapter also explains fundamentals of resource allocation in data networks.

Chapter 13, Networks in Switch Fabrics, looks inside switch fabrics of such Internet devices as routers. The chapter begins by classifying characteristics of switching networks and presenting features and basic definitions of switch fabrics. As the building blocks of switching ...

Excellent Technical Overview of IP Networks
By S. Shields
I'm a system engineer who needed a quick technical overview of IP-based (packet switched) networks. This text was the exact level and scope that I needed. It provided concise and easy-to-follow explanations with supporting diagrams, figures and high level equations (all nicely arranged). It also was quite readable which was a nice change for an engineering text. It provided interspersed exercises and solutions that were nice as well. Please be advised this is not a developer's text with detailed algorithms and explicit mathematical formulation for coding purposes although many equations are provided to illustrate the concept and high-level mathematics. It also is not a fluffy overview text for non-technical enthusiasts (you still need some engineering or computer background to fully appreciate this text).

I had a vague understanding of networking, but really needed a more comprehensive understanding of how everything fit together following the 5 layer TCP/IP model. I also wanted some technical explanation without needing to know the nth detail of how to code algorithms or build a network. This text filled that void. It really is targeted for technical system type folks who need to increase their understanding of IP networks.

If you are looking for an A-to-Z technical overview of how packet-switched networks operate then this is the book for you. It is helpful to have a bit of basic engineering mathematics under your belt. Each chapter builds on the previous, but you can also use this text as a reference to look up stand-alone topics and you will find good explanations on each topic. Two thumbs up from me.

you need this book on your desk when something fails in your network.
By A. Stephens
This great, up-to-date book could be used as supplementary network engineers training manual in preparation for Cisco/Networking exams.

One word of caution: This book is not for beginners or software developers. Written for Network Technicians and Engineers in mind, this book requires a solid mathematics foundation to comprehend it. Ideal for students who want to get an advanced knowledge in networking, this book provides an excellent educational blend of theoretical and practical approaches, including real life scenarios.

Nader Mir has extensive knowledge of the networking industry and communicates it in an excellent progression from the basics to more complex situations, including complex number-crunching techniques. This book would come in handy as a desk reference; it would help the reader to grasp ideas of IT and networking at an expert level - illustrating all layers of the TCP/IP model or serving as a troubleshooting guide for an enterprise size network.

Whether you love or hate this book, as an IT or networking tech, you need this book on your desk when something fails in your network.

all about networks
By W Boudville
It's all about networks. We learn the fundamental ideas of TCP/IP, which is of course the Internet. The crucial role played by congestion control is well explained. And we see how the much mooted next generation IPv6 is more than just a hugely expanded address space. For example, it offers an intrinsic Quality of Service that IPv4 only kludges.

The text also goes into wireless networks. A key difference compared to a wired network is the limited bandwidth. Another is the much easier evesdropping. Of course, the most important wireless networks are those used for cellphones. We can understand the basic models of cellular radio.

The book uses enough maths treatment to fully convey the theoretical underpinnings of the main types of networks.

Most of the text is naturally about the Internet and cellular radio, as these have massive global deployment. But the last 2 chapters diverge. One talks about ad hoc networks, especially the mobile variety. While the other concerns Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs). Both do not have the broad usage but are interesting new ways of configuring networks.

For an ad hoc network, it is often seen as mobile. But unlike cellular radio, there is no grid of fixed basestations. So routing protocols are quite different; it's a harder problem.

While for a WSN, there is indeed a fixed sink. Superficially, this corresponds to a basestation in a cellular radio network. The problem is that the sensor nodes are severely energy constrained. Their batteries cannot be recharged. This gives rise to constraints of minimising power usage and communication, as the latter uses far more energy than computation on the same amount of data. Space considerations limit the treatment of WSN to one chapter. If you want a more extensive discussion, you can try Wireless Sensor Networks: A Networking Perspective.

Three thousand, four thousand years maybe, have passed and gone since human feet last trod the floor on which you stand, and yet, as you note the signs of recent life around you-the half-filled bowl of mortar for the door, the blackened lamp, the finger-mark on the freshly painted surface, the farewell garland dropped on the threshold-you feel it might have been but yesterday . . . . Time is annihilated by little intimate details such as these, and you feel an intruder.
– Egyptologist Howard Carter, notebook entry on Tutankhamun's tomb, November 26, 1922

Golden pharaohs, lost cities, grinning human skeletons: Archaeology is the stuff of romance and legend! Many people still think of archaeologists as adventurers and treasure hunters, like Indiana Jones of Hollywood movie fame seeking the elusive Holy Grail. This enduring image goes back to the late nineteenth century, when archaeologists like Heinrich Schliemann could still find lost civilizations like Troy and excavate three royal palaces in a week. Today, few, if any, archaeologists behave like Indiana Jones. They are scientists, not adventurers, as comfortable in an air-conditioned laboratory as they are on a remote excavation. The development of scientific archaeology from its Victorian beginnings ranks among the greatest triumphs of twentieth-century science. Archaeology has changed our understanding of the human experience in profound ways. A century ago, most scientists believed humans were no more than 100,000 years old. Today we know that our origins go back at least 5 million years. Our predecessors assumed the Americas were settled in about 8000 B.C. and that farming began around 4000 B.C. New excavations date the first Americans to at least 12,000 B.C. and the beginnings of agriculture to about 10,000 B.C. Most important, archaeology has changed our perceptions of ourselves, especially of our biological and cultural diversity. Welcome to the fascinating world of archaeology!

The fifth edition of World Prehistory continues a long tradition of providing an interesting, jargon-free journey through the 5million-year-old landscape of the human past. I hope you enjoy your sojourn in its pages.

Highlights of the Fifth Edition

The fifth edition of World Prehistory has been revised throughout to reflect the latest advances in the field, and it includes suggestions by dozens of archaeologists and students who have taken the trouble to contact me after using previous editions.

This is an exciting time to be writing about archaeology. Many scientific advances are changing our perceptions about the past. Accordingly, the fifth edition is somewhat longer than its predecessors, with expanded coverage of major theoretical issues and the early civilizations. The fifth edition contains important new discoveries about early human evolution, the late Ice Age, and the origins of agriculture. New and updated coverage of the field appears in every chapter, with an up-to-date Guide to Further Reading at the end of the book along with a glossary of technical terms and one of archaeological sites and cultural names.

Updating and Rewriting
  • New perceptions of world prehistory. Chapter 1 includes important discussions of archaeology and alternative perspectives on the past, reflecting new thinking on this important topic.
  • Early human evolution. Chapter 2 discusses the latest advances in the study of human origins, including the latest fossil discoveries in Ethiopia and Kenya, among them Australopithecus garhi, a confusing and still enigmatic predecessor of humanity.
  • Origins of modern humans. Chapter 3 covers new research into the controversial issue of the earliest modern humans and fresh perceptions of Neanderthal ancestry and behavior.
  • Origins of food production. Chapter 5 incorporates expanded coverage of the latest theories on the origins of agriculture and animal domestication. Chapter 6, which describes the first farmers, incorporates new dates for early agriculture obtained from accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) radiocarbon dates and the results of new researches into the early farming village at Abu Hureyra, Syria, currently the earliest agricultural settlement in the world.
  • Origins of states and civilization. Chapter 8 has been expanded to include current theoretical debates on the origins of state-organized societies, including the issues of factionalism and charismatic leadership. Chapters 9 to 14 offer an up-to-date description and analysis of the first civilizations, with expanded coverage of ancient Egyptian civilization and of south and southeast Asian states. Chapters 12 and 13 offer more comprehensive analysis of highland and lowland Mesoamerican civilizations than in previous editions.
  • Revision and updating throughout. The entire text and Guide to Further Reading have been revised and updated on a page-by-page basis.
Boxes

Three types of in-text boxes enhance the book, designed to amplify the narrative:

  • Science. These boxes introduce key dating methods and other scientific approaches, such as radiocarbon and AMS dating, and also environmental reconstruction.
  • Sites. Each chapter includes one or more boxes describing sites of unusual importance, and some aspects of unusual interest.
  • Voices. The Mesopotamian, Egyptian, and highland Mesoamerican chapters include special boxes that quote from writings of ancient times, giving each an unusual "voice."
New and Revised Art Program

The fifth edition's art program has been expanded with new photographs and fresh or revised line art. The new illustrations provide additional background on recent discoveries, amplify the narrative, or replace older art with new pictures. Some expanded captions serve to integrate the illustrations more closely into the text.

Complete Redesign

The entire book has been completely redesigned to make it more user-friendly.

Ancillary Materials

The ancillary materials that accompany this textbook have been carefully created to enhance the topics being discussed.

Instructor's Manual with Tests. For each chapter in the text, this manual provides a detailed outline, list of objectives, discussion questions, classroom activities, and additional resources. The test bank includes multiple choice, true-false, and essay questions for each chapter.

Companion Website®. In tandem with the text, students and professors can now take full advantage of the World Wide Web to enrich their study of archaeology. The Fagan Website correlates the text with related material available on the Internet. Features of the Website include chapter objectives and study questions, as well as links to interesting material and information from other sites on the Web that can reinforce and enhance the content of each chapter. Address: http://www.prenhall.com/fagan

Anthropoloy on the Internet 2001: Evaluating Online Resources. This guide introduces students to the origin and innovations behind the Internet and provides clear strategies for navigating the complexity of the Internet and World Wide Web. Exercises within and at the end of the chapters allow students to practice searching for the myriad of resources available to the student of anthropology. This supplementary book is free to students when shrinkwrapped as a package with World Prehistory: A Brief Introduction, 5/E.

Man's origins and developments for the general reader
By A Customer
Man's innate curiosity with their past has given birth to sciences that attempt to satisfy such curiosity. Brian Fagan, an archaeologist himself, outlines brilliantly the major developments of humankind in prehistory, from that scientific perspective. Sophisticated theories and tools from disciplines such archaeology, biology, ecology, geology and even genetics and psychology are elaborated for the general reader. Utilising such diversity of disciplines, World Prehistory introduces to the reader, the developments of humankind- the origins, exodus and migration of man, food production and state formation- from the earliest times especially before written records were available.
Even before Fagan gets into details, he outlines the scope of the book and distinguishes the discipline of archaeology insofar as it is scientific, rigorous and it utilises tools and expertise from other disciplines. Throughout the book, there are scientific archaeological explanations in the form of theories, data and methodologies and at the very onset, the author derides the "romantic world of high adventure and exciting discovery" connected to pseudoarcheaology, which to him belongs to the "realms of religious faith and science fiction".
The book is divided into 4 parts in a generally chronological arrangement. The first part introduces to the reader the study of human prehistory with succinct explanations of the concepts of history, culture, space and time. Part 2 outlines scientific approaches to explain the origins of mankind and his relationships with other primates. The author draws evidence from geology, genetics and most importantly, paleoanthropology (the specialized study of human bone remains). Part 2 also presents one of the most controversial questions in anthropology, that is the path of migration of modern man. The author favours the "African exodus Theory"" and describes it in detail. Part 3 is a discussion of the birth of the modern world with special emphasis on the origins of food production, one of the hallmarks of ancient civilisations. The book culminates in Part 4, with very broad discussions on ancient civilisations in Western Asia, Africa, South, Southeast and East Asia and the Americas.
As an introductory book to world prehistory, it lacks detailed study of other aspects of prehistoric mankind's developments especially in the fields of language, religion and a new, exciting and only recently explored field of psychological archaeology, dealing with the minds and thinking of the earliest humans. The latter, the author concedes, must go beyond material remains and develop new ways to explore the minds of the earliest humans and understand why they developed the way they did.
However, as with most introductory books, World Prehistory can only describe its subject matter at surface level. However, after reading the book, I have obtained a general sense of the methods and theories that attempt to explain with the period of human history which was not recorded in writing. With so many theories, methods and even non-scientific explanations of mankind's ancient past, World Prehistory is a good book to introduce a reader to the latest and most widely accepted tools, methodologies and theories.

A very decent book
By Jacob Goertz
This book is not designed for the hardcore anthropology student as it doesn't delve into the extreme details of the subject, but it does give a very broad overview of the millions of years of human prehistory. Most of the time is spent talking about the journey from ape-like ancestors to the origin of food production and the large state-run societies that we have today. Therefore, when Fagan talks about specific cultures and societies he just gives an overview, he chooses to put most details to use describing why and how humans got to where they are today. Very good book is you want an effective and interesting introduction to human origins, but this isn't something that would be used for a 300 or 400 level class.

Excellent
By Dan
It saddens me to have to send this textbook back as trade-in so I can afford the textbooks for my next semester. The author explains in detail the origins, interactions and complexities of human prehistory without resorting to technical language. I've had my 14 year old cousin read this book and she not only understood it but loved it. 'I wish my school's books were this cool' she said. That alone speaks volumes for the book and the author.

A fantastic resource for those who build data centers
    By Anthony I.
When I was tasked with designing and overseeing the construction my company's new data center, the first thing I did was a deep research dive - and while there is lots of information on the subject available on the internet, this book was probably the single most helpful resource I relied upon during our build-out. Although it is beginning to get a bit dated, almost all of the recommendations and suggested policies / procedures make sound sense today, and it helped me to avoid many easy-to-make mistakes. I strongly recommend this book to anyone who is responsible for data center design, construction, or even maintaining servers outside of a data center - the ideas in this book can be applied to many situations outside of the data center, and helped to make me a more critical and careful system administrator.

The Biomechanical Foundation of Clinical Orthodontics, by Charles J. Burstone, Kwangchul Choy, PhD

All orthodontic treatment modalities can be improved by the application of sound biomechanics, yet most orthodontic therapy today is delivered without consideration of forces or force systems. Orthodontic hardware itself is only a means to an end point, such as tooth alignment, home remodeling, or growth modifications; the orthodontist can achieve these goals only by manipulating forces, regardless of the techniques used. Written by a world-renowned authority on the subject, this book teaches biomechanics in an easy-to-understand and engaging way, using universal examples outside orthodontics to illustrate basic force systems and how they function and then applying these principles to the practice of clinical orthodontics. The authors cover all the force systems an orthodontist needs to understand to deliver effective treatment, explaining how each can be controlled and manipulated and demonstrating the forces at work through highly instructive 3D illustrations. Most chapters conclude with the presentation of several study problems, allowing the reader an opportunity to practice developing treatment plans using the biomechanics concepts discussed in each chapter. (Answers are provided at the end of the book.) This book is sure to be an instant classic.

    Content is worth it.
    By Spears Ma'aseh
I normally don't write reviews this often but, This book is definitely helpful and while I order the hard cover edition. I really enjoy how this product is presented. I haven't read through yet but I heard many good things about Ron Tiner, A fellow artist who's in the industry recommended me this book. I'm on the side of the technical artist and I'm not usually good at drawing from mind but always need photo reference to get started and boost my ideas.

I recommend to check this book out. The knowledge and content is invaluable for those who are an artist with a weak imagination. Aleast thats what I consider myself.

    Book, worthy of note.
    By Alek
Not exactly what I expected, but a interesting book nonetheless.

I especially enjoyed the first half of the book(and it was the reason I got it).
This is not a clean cut "how to" book, this is not a beginner's book either.

It is general guide, from the viewpoint of a veteran British illustrator, for those who already know how to handle a pencil.

As I said before, an interesting book.

    Good book

The book came in three days. It was a little more worn than I expected and had price scans and cards being used for the library, but everything was readable and over all i like the book.
