From School Library Journal
YA-- A look at medical ethics and the critical-care decisions made by the ethics committee, doctors, and four sets of patients/parents at Hermann Hospital in Texas between May-October 1988. Quality of life is measured against longevity and consideration is given to expenditure of limited resources. As most of these patients were children or young adults, the book has immediacy for high school students. The epilogue, written four years later, brings closure to decisions made. Young people interested in medicine or the health-care crisis are sure to find this involving.

From Library Journal
Taking her title from the physicians' Hippocratic Oath, Belkin, who covers medical issues for the New York Times, spent nearly three years with the Hermann Hospital Ethics Committee in Houston, Texas, researching this provocative book on medical ethics. The daily, convulsive questions of life and death that the committee struggles with are often questions without answers, yet they are somehow answered at the Hermann Hospital and in hospitals across the country every single day. Belkin quotes a Chinese proverb: if you save a life, you are responsible for it. The cruel, deceptively simple wisdom of this proverb is brought home on nearly every page of this entirely true, gripping, and dramatic account of how medical chance and technology trap the unsuspecting in a vise of brutal decision-making. Totally engrossing and highly recommended. For a theological perspective on medical ethics, see the review of Theological Voices in Medical Ethics on p. 122.

Power Writing, Power Reporting, Power Insights
By Andres T. Tapia
Sure there is plenty of powerful content to praise, but first I want to celebrate author Lisa Belkin's fabulous writing style. She sure knows how to tell a gripping and compelling story. In the tradition of nonfiction writers who write like novelists such as Jon Krakauer (Into Thin Air) and Mark Bowden (Black Hawk Down) Belkin fuses top-notch reporting with authentic protagonist voices, brilliant insights, and the ability to surface root causes, map out trends, and distill the core philosophical issues at stake.

Belkin applies these gifts to telling the story of the most wrenching life and death ethical dilemmas staff, doctors, nurses, and family members face at Hermann Hospital in Houston, Texas. Amazing advances in medical technology have forced all of us to confront questions never before encountered: when do we stop trying to keep someone alive? what is the definition of quality of life? who gets to decide -- the doctors or the family members? what is the difference between the law, ethics, and morals? how to best live with the decision once it's made?

It takes courage to delve into these questions and to bear the responsibility for them as the ethics committee does at Hermann. It also took a great amount of bravery to offer journalist Belkin unrestricted access to the inner workings of the hospital and the committee. The result is a significantly important book that contributes in vital ways to the ongoing conversations we need to be having in society and among our families as technology puts us more in the position of having to make god-like decisions.

By Denise Maxwell
As a nurse these are issues we deal with all the time and then ask if we helped patients and their family's make the right decision. This certainly showed the ramifications of those decisions. WOW very thought provoking. Should be required reading for all med students and nurses. Highly recommend it

Read This PRIOR to Commenting on the Health Care Insurance Debate
By Yorkie Girl
First, Do No Harm. Here we are, in August 2009, with a very heated battle going on in regards to the health insurance battle. People are worried about death panels, Nazi health care (we will be treating Nazis?), and a number of hysterical assumptions. Guess what! Death panels have existed under other names, or perhaps no names at all. Some hospitals call them Ethics Committees, when they are named. But if you are ever involved with the long-term care of someone who is critically ill, a birth defect, or a severe car accident, YOU become part of a death panel, like it or not. Through describing the life & death situations of a variety of patients, author Lisa Belkin educates us in an area a lot of what we don't want to admit to: we will all die, and someone other than ourselves could be making that decision as to when.

What Doctors Feel: How Emotions Affect the Practice of Medicine, by Danielle Ofri

A look at the emotional side of medicine—the shame, fear, anger, anxiety, empathy, and even love that affect patient care

Physicians are assumed to be objective, rational beings, easily able to detach as they guide patients and families through some of life’s most challenging moments. But doctors’ emotional responses to the life-and-death dramas of everyday practice have a profound impact on medical care. And while much has been written about the minds and methods of the medical professionals who save our lives, precious little has been said about their emotions. In What Doctors Feel, Dr. Danielle Ofri has taken on the task of dissecting the hidden emotional responses of doctors, and how these directly influence patients.

How do the stresses of medical life—from paperwork to grueling hours to lawsuits to facing death—affect the medical care that doctors can offer their patients? Digging deep into the lives of doctors, Ofri examines the daunting range of emotions—shame, anger, empathy, frustration, hope, pride, occasionally despair, and sometimes even love—that permeate the contemporary doctor-patient connection. Drawing on scientific studies, including some surprising research, Dr. Danielle Ofri offers up an unflinching look at the impact of emotions on health care.

With her renowned eye for dramatic detail, Dr. Ofri takes us into the swirling heart of patient care, telling stories of caregivers caught up and occasionally torn down by the whirlwind life of doctoring. She admits to the humiliation of an error that nearly killed one of her patients and her forever fear of making another. She mourns when a beloved patient is denied a heart transplant. She tells the riveting stories of an intern traumatized when she is forced to let a newborn die in her arms, and of a doctor whose daily glass of wine to handle the frustrations of the ER escalates into a destructive addiction. But doctors don’t only feel fear, grief, and frustration. Ofri also reveals that doctors tell bad jokes about “toxic sock syndrome,” cope through gallows humor, find hope in impossible situations, and surrender to ecstatic happiness when they triumph over illness.  The stories here reveal the undeniable truth that emotions have a distinct effect on how doctors care for their patients. For both clinicians and patients, understanding what doctors feel can make all the difference in giving and getting the best medical care.

From Booklist
*Starred Review* Tucked inside a white lab coat or scrub suit is a welter of human emotions that can play a large role in a doctor’s decision-making process. Ofri, an internist at New York’s Bellevue Hospital, explores the emotional core of doctoring. Suturing together her own experiences, the plights of memorable patients, and interviews with other physicians, she examines the diverse feelings—anger, grief, shame, disillusionment, gratitude, humility, joy—that can fluster or elevate physicians. “Fear is a primal emotion in medicine,” she writes, and doctors worry about making a mistake or even killing a patient. Sadness is an occupational hazard, and “A thread of sorrow weaves through the daily life of medicine.” Then there’s empathy. Is it innate, acquired, or both, and why do third-year medical students lose it? Ofri exposes her emotional side as she recounts the story of a longtime patient, an undocumented immigrant from Guatemala who finally receives a heart transplant but dies shortly after the procedure. Ofri admits, “Doctors who are angry, nervous, jealous, burned out, terrified, or ashamed can usually still treat bronchitis or ankle sprains competently.” Yet her insightful and invigorating book makes the case that it’s better for patients if a physician’s emotional compass-needle points in a positive direction. --Tony Miksanek

A Must Read. Moving, Affecting, and Thought-Provoking
By Anthony Youn, MD
Decades ago, physicians were taught to keep their emotions separate from the doctor - patient relationship. The fear was that the physician's judgment could be affected and the patient could suffer profound ramifications. Years ago, Dr. Jerome Groopman wrote a best-selling book, "How Doctors Think." It opened the eyes of millions of readers to the psyche of the physician and how an individual doctor's thought processes affect the care of the patient. Now, physician / author Danielle Ofri has written "What Doctors Feel." I've spent the last few days reading it, and would give it my highest recommendation.

I first came across Dr. Ofri's writing with her seminal memoir about medical school, "Singular Intimacies." It is one of the books that inspired me to become a writer as well. With her most recent book, Dr. Ofri's writing has matured, like the physician she has become. The subjects she tackles are large, important, and impactful, especially in today's fractured medical climate. How does the fear of lawsuits affect a doctor's job performance? What about insurance issues? I found parts of the book deeply affecting, and believe that her gift of writing shines through greatest in these.

I highly recommend this book for anyone in the health profession, and especially for college students aspiring to enter the field of medicine. It should be considered for medical school curriculums as well. Five stars.

Must-Read for Medical Students
By MpDakkak
I needed this book. After finishing a surgery clerkship, I was at the lowest place I had been all year. A friend told me at the beginning of the rotation to keep a copy of my personal statement in my pocket, because at times, I would forget why I had chosen to enter medicine. I didn't take his advice, but recognize now that I did become that detached and disillusioned. Thankfully, the combination of a family medicine rotation and having this book to read when patients "would rather not see a medical student" has served the same purpose - if anything, I understand better than ever why I am doing this.

I chose to pursue medicine after realizing that I needed more emotional attachment to the people, and the cause, that I wanted to work for. We talk a lot about `hidden curriculum' in medical school, but I'd take it a step further and say your book discusses the `neglected curriculum' of medical school. I'm almost done with my first year on the wards now, and am familiar enough with patient care to identify with all the `feelings' assigned as chapter titles. Countless times, I've wondered how residents and attendings deal with difficult patient deaths, the joy of successful treatment, medical errors, the reprimanding that takes place during M&M, litigation, etc. All we have to learn from are the behaviors our supervisors respond to these situations with, and so much is left unspoken on account of being `resilient.'

I can't thank Dr. Ofri enough for her willingness to be vulnerable and brutally honest. I greatly appreciated the work she did to present different perspectives on each emotion, with many of the stories not having classic `happy endings.' An appeal of medicine is to work in an environment that challenges you at your emotional, ethical, and philosophical core, as much as it does intellectually. But while so much time is spent developing our intellect amidst emotional challenges, you're essentially left on your own to process experiences and develop coping skills. While there are attempts to create a space for reflection in a `doctoring' course, discussions among peers are limited in value compared to hearing from the professionals we aspire to become. This book provides invaluable insight to students.

A Sense of Dance - 2nd Edition: Exploring Your Movement Potential, by Constance Schrader

A Sense of Dance: Exploring Your Movement Potential, Second Edition, is written for true beginners—students who are exploring the art form for the first time and are not likely to describe themselves as dancers. Through this text, students discover that dance is an accessible art form that can bring greater self-awareness and self-confidence. It helps new dancers learn how to express themselves through dance.

This second edition, based on an already-successful textbook, features three new chapters that add even more depth to the topics covered. The chapters address the power of dance through time and place, culture, and community; a sense of style; and patterns of coordination.

Like the first edition, this empowering text uses an interactive approach to invite students to learn about dance through everyday experiences, personal observations, and guided experiences.

The following are some of the special elements in the text:
- “Inside Insights” encourage students to reflect on interesting observations that may affect their movement and expression.

-“Try This Experiment” exercises are guided physical explorations of concepts in the text that help students become more kinesthetically aware of their movements and discover new ways of moving.

-“Think About It” sections require students to reflect on how they can apply the information presented. These considerations provide good material for journal entries.

-“Your Turn to Dance” provides two opportunities per chapter for students to work in small groups to discover movement possibilities, solve problems, and hone their observation and evaluation skills. These become springboards for choreography that reinforces the concepts in the chapter—and provide another adventure of exploring movement potential.
The author uses a basic movement vocabulary that you can use to describe and evaluate movement possibilities, improve sensitivity when working in groups, develop critical-thinking skills, and express ideas and emotions through movement.

The book also contains these features designed to help students personalize and interact with the content:
-Short quizzes

-Highlight boxes

-Self-assessment exercises

-Updated, easy-reference index
Whatever your students' level of artistic awareness, this engaging text will inspire innovation and help you guide students in the discovery of their own creativity and sense of dance.

About the Author

Constance Schrader, MA, is an independent artist and a lecturer at the University of North Carolina at Asheville, where she founded and directs the dance program. She received her master's degree in dance from Mills College in Oakland, California, in 1979. Schrader is a member of the North Carolina Dance Alliance and Alternate ROOTS, a national organization of performing artists

Throughout her dance career Schrader has been awarded many grants and scholarships, including consecutive scholarships to attend the American Dance Festival. She has toured internationally with Meredith Monk/The House and has presented her own choreography nationally and internationally. She has worked as an associate director of a dance company and is affiliated with a regional movement theater company. Schrader is also a certified Pilates instructor.

In addition to being a teacher, choreographer, and a national and international performing artist for more than 30 years, Schrader has a rich variety of real-life experiences that have helped her make dance an art form that is accessible to a wide range of people. In fact, her greatest sense of accomplishment doesn't come from diplomas or awards, but from teaching 3,000 Japanese people to clap a rhythm at a festival in Togamura and coaxing U.S. executives to loosen their ties, kick off their shoes, and leap and laugh.

Schrader lives in Asheville, North Carolina, with her husband, Clayton, and their children, where she pursues her other passion, gardening.

Like having a Friend guide you through the process
By QuestionMark
A delightful, thorough and original review of the many skeins that weave through dance. The three chapters on choreographing were unbelievably helpful as I went through the process of making some of my own dances. Like having a trusted friend talk you through the process. I was able to critically examine and revise (or throw-out!) some of the elements I was using. As the previous reviewer noted, a unique and particularly helpful aspect of this book is the numerous movement and compositional exercises the author walks (dances) you through.
