Very informative book. Some sections provide more info than needed for registry. Gave 3 stars because does not provide access to any power point notes which would be great for quick reviews of the lengthy chapters. As much as book cost there should be access to pp slides b/c information is a bit overwhelming for CT students trying to pass the registry. But good info, would use as a reference book for registry not as a direct study tool.

This is a unique book that will quickly find an important place among the standard references for primary care pediatric providers.  It is comprehensive and well written, covering much of what primary care providers encounter that is absent from the standard intensive care textbooks of neonatology. There is no comparable books in this area -- this fills an important need.

This book from the American Academy of Pediatrics is directed at primary care physicians or nurse practitioners who care for newborns with common problems. The book differs from standard neonatal books in that it does not emphasize intensive care or the care of extremely premature infants, but rather a practical approach to common problems seen in the first month of life.

The purpose is to provide "an action-oriented working tool" for primary care providers on common neonatal problems. This is a very worthwhile objective; these issues are often overlooked in standard textbooks. Under the direction of editor Dr. Deborah Campbell, the more than 50 contributors certainly meet their goal.

The book is aimed at primary care providers, but active neonatologists also may use this as a reference for the frequent consult in the well-baby nursery. The editor and many of the contributors are well-known authorities in the field. The book has been reviewed by experts in the relevant sections and committees of the American Academy of Pediatrics

The seven sections of the book cover common conditions such as routine care, abnormalities of the physical exam, and common medical conditions such as jaundice, respiratory distress, heart murmur, and metabolic problems. About the Author

Deborah Campbell, MD, FAAP, is Professor of Clinical Pediatrics and Associate Professor of Clinical Obstetrics & Gynecology and Women’s Health at Albert Einstein College of Medicine, Program Director for the fellowship in Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine, and Director of the Division of Neonatology at the Children’s Hospital at Montefiore. She conducts the Low birth weight infant Evaluation and Assessment Program (LEAP) and has served various leadership roles at the American Academy of Pediatrics, New York State Association of Regional Perinatal Programs and Networks, NYC Local Early Intervention Coordinating Council, and Greater New York March of Dimes Health Professionals Advisory Board and National March of Dimes.

She is a member of the Greater New York Hospital Association Perinatal Safety Collaborative Advisory Group, the National Quality Forum Perinatal Collaborative, and the New York State Perinatal Quality Collaborative Neonatology Expert Workgroup. She also serves on the NYS Palliative Care Education and Training Council, an expert panel that has developed guidance and advice for the New York State Department of Health on best practices in pain management and end-of-life care. She served as a member on the AAP Taskforce on Implementation of Newborn Hearing Screening and the Early Hearing Detection and Intervention (EHDI) Program. She is currently co-chair of the Bright Futures Guidelines, 4th edition Infancy Expert Panel.

excellent suzuki style training for newbie fiddlers

my daughter and i (7 and 42, respectively) have been taking suzuki violin lessons together and recently decided to try some fiddling. o'connor's approach follows the suzuki method, making it very understandable. he has added interesting historical information about many of the songs and styles. the tunes are familiar so they are fun to play, and many of them can be played by a twinkler without any additional skills -- expanding her repertoire so easily has been very gratifying for my daughter. as an adult, i don't find o'connor's books to be as complete as a training method, so they're not really a replacement for suzuki, but they are fun and his arrangements are playable by a newbie like myself. we have books 1 & 2 and they are excellent additions to our musical training.

Has its uses but jumps around too much to be core material

I am a Suzuki teacher and I have the O'Connor books 1 and 2 to use as, I admit, supplemental material. I am very open to the idea of teaching kids pedagogically using American tunes. I have also taught all of my students how to improvise (even before these books).

My major qualm with the O'Connor method is that it does not teach BASIC violin technique as smoothly as the Suzuki books. Each Suzuki piece builds on itself by adding one new technique. For example, once the student learns the twinkle variations and twinkle theme, Lightly Row adds using the individual second finger. Every other skill required to play Lightly Row aside from the individual 2 is the same as Twinkle Theme.

In the O'Connor method he starts off with three Boil Em' Cabbage Down variations. Basically, three of the twinkle variations. The next piece in the books is called Beautiful Skies. In order to play this piece, the student must be able to string cross while changing bow directions (something not covered in his Boil Em' Cabbage variations), be able to quickly change bow patterns (long notes vs. short notes), and start figuring out how to use the third finger more efficiently. That's a huge jump in skills required if this was the only book you were learning from.

However, if this is not the only book you plan on using to teach, it is a nice collection of fiddle tunes. It also makes for a smooth introduction to the fiddling style if the student already knows how to play.

Great Fiddle Method book!

OConnor presents fiddling in an easy step by step process. It is a fun way for students to learn the violin. Historical information about the fiddle pieces are also included with each song. My son and daughter have both enjoyed this book as a supplement to their classical violin method books.
