East and West: Understanding the Rise of China
by Y.J. Choi
Innumerable articles and books have been written about East Asia and China since this part of the world has been catapulted into the center of the global economic scene. Unfortunately, most, if not all of them, are wide of the mark in terms of understanding the geographic and philosophical fundamentals of Eastern civilizations undergirding the rise of the East. The relative decline of the West appears to be inevitable as the ascendance of the East prompts a shift of the center of gravity from the Atlantic to the Pacific. Accordingly, we need to understand the East (and the West, for that matter) by freeing ourselves from the centuries-old habit of West-centrism. Neither in the West nor in the East do we find a paper written with a balanced approach regarding the two civilizations. Because of this, and thanks to his vast experience in both East and West, Ambassador Y.J. Choi was prompted to explain this epochal change by comparing the two civilizations on equal footing. His text constitutes the very first book attempting an objective, neutral and balanced comparison of ancient Eastern and European/Mediterranean civilizations, including their influence on and implications for contemporary events.

Essential reading
By Paul L.
An inquiry into the divergence between Asian and European civilization in the vein of Jared Diamond's Guns, Germs, and Steel, Choi's East and West compares the historical, philosophical, religious and cultural roots of both civilizations to synthesize a wholly unique explanation for their strikingly contrasting emergences.
Like Diamond's book, East and West begins with geography as its basic foundation for understanding the direction of human history--namely, that Western geography is open to the sea, thus giving birth to an "expansive," "maritime" civilization, while Eastern geography is insulated by land, thus resulting in a "circumscribed," "continental" civilization. But where Guns, Germs, and Steel mainly uses geographical comparison to account for the differing rates of technological and industrial progress in various regions, East and West goes a step farther and examines how the geographical differences between Eastern and Western civilization molded the philosophical and cultural paradigms--the very thinking--of their peoples: how the West developed a philosophy driven by law, separation, freedom, and individualism, while the East emphasized ethics, harmony, and meritocracy.
Throughout, Choi weaves a convincing analysis of the histories--political, theological, philosophical, and technological--of both civilizations. He also offers a refreshingly unbiased portrait of Eastern thought. Many major Western figures, such as Christ, Aquinas, Copernicus, Nietzsche, Spinoza, Hume, Machiavelli, Vasco da Gama, are covered here, as well as their Eastern counterparts, such as Confucius, Xun Zi, Sun Tzu, Junzi, Lao Tzu. All of this of course aims to set a foundation for understanding not only past history but current developments on the international stage and future projections regarding the growing power and influence of China and Asia--fulfilling the promise of the book's subtitle.
There are plenty of surprising, original insights along the way. Choi explores not only the broad bases of the two civilizations' belief systems but also many specific developments, e.g., the reasons why the West was able to invent democracy, and why Eastern nations now seem so easily to be able to adopt it for themselves. This is fascinating, highly relevant stuff. Strongly recommended to anyone interested in Eastern philosophy or world politics or history, and absolutely essential reading for those who are looking for an explanation for China's sudden reawakening as a world power.

If you are looking for easy reading then this book is not for you. It is nevertheless a delight to read a book that comes along once in a while and challenges traditional perceptions and propose solutions to fundamental problems emerging from our current systems. History teaches us that challenges directed at prevailing thinking often lead to fundamental changes in the way civilizations evolves. This is one of those books. The book provides a comprehensive analysis of the development of the east and west and further postulates valuable lessons in terms of current shortcomings in western thinking which is reaching its peak and is in need of modification to be able to keep pace with an ever changing world. Armed with a better understanding of Eastern culture, which is well defined by the author, and understanding shortcomings in current Western culture, in between lies the answer. Globalization necessarily leads to a circumscribed world and this book is full of solutions and ideas of how better to attack the problems posed by globalization, a world where ethics (east) and the rule of law (west) should join hands in finding lasting solutions to our changing world. We have recently seen a spate of results brought about by greed. It is clear from this environment that there is ample need for eastern Junzi and Wuwei, leaders who can go beyond the need for egotistical "more" (greed) and who will have the wisdom to know when to take action. Altruism is needed; the author gives ample examples of why this is postulated as a solution to current shortcomings in a globalised world, drawing form the rich cultural heritage of Eastern teachings. The author also brilliantly succeeded on framing western aggressive foreign policy, which is still based on an approach typical to that of an expansive world, almost as if the west is still setting out to sea. In stark contrast eastern foreign policy, Africa is a good example, does not reflect this aggressive behavior. Easterners are for example far less implicated in the politics of other nations than their western counterparts further amplifying the approach the long traditions in their culture follows in a circumscribed world. From this the author proposes a paradigm shift, one that is befitting to a circumscribed world where ethics and the rule of law strike a balance. The book is written way ahead of its time and will only start serving its purpose in years to come as the current paradigm in world affairs does not yet fully recognize its own shortcomings. It is more than an intellectual master piece, it can be classed amongst one of the greatest books of our time and it will eventually have a fundamental influence on future paths the world will undertake. Simply a masterpiece.

Absolute masterpiece of our times!
By Yeocheol Yoon
This book presents a unique blend of political science, history, philosophy and medical science which comes from Choi's own unique background and life-long quest for a right balance and combination between the faith-driven ideological approaches of the West and wisdom-based pragmatism of the East.
In a stark contrast to the conventional wisdom that the rise of China is a strategic threat to the US, or to the West in general, Choi invite us to read into the Chinese mind that comes from their past history and realism in the present.
For those who are interested in the future of US-China rivalry as well as comparative understanding of two sides, this is a must read.
