Barbara Robinson has written several popular books for children, including My Brother Louis Measures Worms, The Best School Year Ever, The Best Halloween Ever, and the enormously popular bestselling novel The Best Christmas Pageant Ever, first published in 1972, which was made into a classic TV movie and on which this book was based. The play The Best Christmas Pageant Ever is produced annually in theaters, schools, and churches all over the world. Ms. Robinson has two daughters and three grandchildren.

This book is an annual read for me. I love the way the story brings out the humanism of the Savior's birth. It reminds me that His birth wasn't the sanitary and immaculately unrealistic birth we seem to imagine. Joseph and Mary were real people with real feelings and they lived in the real world. The stable would not have been clean and had an abundance of fresh clean straw. Not with the crowds of people and animals that were there to be taxed. Barbara Robinson did a wonderful job of bringing out the reality of the conditions surrounding the Savior's birth through her insight that is so beautifully woven into this book. It will remain on my annual list of books to read at Christmas time for as long as I can continue to read, and after that I hope to be able to listen to it from a recording of some sort. I highly recommend this book to everyone that is searching for a story that will bring out the true meaning of Christmas.

If you know anything at all about how things are usually done in churches, you'll howl over this.

This book has been out for years and I still reread it every few years. It's told from the prospective of a young girl, about 10 or 12 years old. Her church has a busybody who runs everything. When the woman gets hurt, they farm out all the things she's got going (the Potluck Supper, etc) to various other ladies. The mother of the girl who's telling the story gets stuck with the Christmas Pageant. Things are going as usual until the Herdmans show up. The Herdmans are the worst kids in the whole history of the world. Things go downhill from there, with hilarious results. But, in the end, everyone is shown a deeper meaning to the Christmas Story; one that they had forgotten in the bustle of busyness. It makes a good book to read and it also makes a good movie to watch. The movie stars Loretta Swit (of M*A*S*H) who plays the part of the woman forced to run a Christmas Pageant perfectly. Both book and movie are classics and old favorites in my family.

Are you a family person. Do you like stories that are one of a kind special. If so then this story is one you need to have in your collection. The Herdmans are your typical terror in the town. This story show what happens when they finally understand what Christmas is all about. This classic story will have your kids asking for you to read it all over again. My family loves the pictures and descriptions of the charioteers. For example Alice Windalkin is described as being so clean in body and spirit she had detergent clean hands by the time she was two. I hope your family will love this book as much as mine.

Nice Book with self tests

A very nice book for teenagers facing problems with Bullies and bad behaviors.It has self tests inside, the language beign used is simple and can be easily understood.Some might find it extremely helpfull on tecnhiques for facing anger issues, fear, anxiety and deppression from bulling or bad behavior of others.In general i consider it a valuable tool for my Job as a counsellor.

I had to return this book-- something I almost never do. Usually I just pass them on. But this book is written for a pre-teen or young teen who lives in the UK. Encyclopedic ...

... by which I mean a small amount of information about each of a large number of facts, with very little analysis or insight. And, just about as interesting to read as chapter after chapter of encyclopedia entries.

Looking at each chapter's bibliography, you can tell that the authors spent a lot of time poring over back issues of Aviation Week and other publications, so that might save you some time if you are researching a specific failure. And they do have a very extensive collection of failures - this is not just Apollo 13 and Ariane 5.

I was surprised to find mention (and a small amount of detail) of some of the relatively minor programs I have been involved with over the last 15 years or so. However, the visually spectacular failure of the Conestoga launch vehicle (certainly in the category of "minor players") wasn't covered, so this can't be said to be a definitive collection of every launch or spacecraft failure.

If you want to know how failures are analyzed post-mortem, or what processes and procedures are put in place to learn from those mistakes, you won't find it here. This is really just a diary of the timeline of failures in the Space Age.

Excellent book on space failures

This book examines failures related to space exploration in general. It is thorough, much more than I expected. A bit depressing, but it provides invaluable insight into the science, art and craft of building and launching satellites.

The book is divided in two quite different parts: launchers and satellites, with a special chapter on repairs undertaken from the space shuttle.
The launcher part is organized by launchers types, and has a very good objective of putting things in historical perspective, a very good point. The satellite part is organized by failures types. This is a wise way to do in this case.

There is not much to do in case of problems on a launcher apart from doing fault analysis, with corrections to be applied to the next launches. This is quite different and much more interesting with problems on satellites or probes.

They are examples of missions which looked like total write-offs being rescued by the skills and intelligence of engineers using treasures of imagination and ingenuity to rescue a mission, sometimes exceeding the objectives planned originally for the mission. ( Hipparcos, Deep Space 1, etc ) This makes the reading of this section very interesting, sometimes feeling like a thriller.

The real added value of this book is the description of the incredible ingenuity applied by engineers and operators to solve the problems when a satellite fails in orbit, therefore out of physical reach. This is the best part and shows that in general, human being are better to adapt to given situations and solve problems imposed on them than being able to predict them and act accordingly beforehand.

This is proven by the number of incredibly stupid faults described in the book, from the decimal point misplaced, to the calculations made in imperial units instead of metric, leading sometimes to billion size dollars bills.

I regret that some important recap tables (page 157) and some figures are not better printed or be made more readable. Also a good improvement would be to put a success/failures table at the end of each section covering a given launcher.

Also, I regret the absence of a simple tutorial chapter explaining the basics of rocket and satellite event recording and telemetry, the amount and nature of the parameters recorded, the various captors and a basic description of the procedures of post-mortem analysis. This would help appreciate even more the reading of the book.

No real insight or investigation

The references at the end of each chapter are mostly from Aviation Week. Basically, it is a collection of the press releases and Aviation Week reporting on the incidents covered in the book. That IS useful, but it could be so much more powerful with the insight that engineers who worked these programs could have brought.

All the information is available and some of the conclusions don't stand the test of time. One glaring example, when discussing the Chinese launch of commsats "18 July 1998 effectively marked the end of Chinese participation in the commercial launcher market." This has proved laughably untrue as China is one of the dominate players, whereas it is the USA that pushed out of this market.

A father and his four children--a toddler, a preschool boy and two older girls--go on the traditional bear hunt based on the old camp chant: "We're going to catch a big one. / What a beautiful day! / We're not scared. / Oh-oh! Grass! / Long, wavy grass. / We can't go over it. / We can't go under it. / Oh, no! / We've got to go through it!" The family skids down a grassy slope, swishes across a river, sludges through mud and, of course, finally sees the bear, who chases them all back to their home. It's a fantastic journey--was it real or imagined?--with the family's actions (and interaction) adding to the trip a goodnatured, jolly mood. The design of the oversized volume alternates black-and-white drawings with gorgeous full-color watercolor paintings, which Oxenbury uses to wonderful effect. Readers accustomed to her board books will find a different style here, of puddled colors and sweeps of light and shadow. The scale of the pictures and the ease with which the text can be shouted aloud make this ideal for families or groups to share. Ages 4-9.

PreSchool-K-- From England comes this refreshing interpretation of an old camp hand-rhyme presented in large picture-book format. The setting is the beach and its environs. The cast: five hunters (a man and four children) and a dog, all of whom stalk the furry beast through coastal landscapes, oozy mud, an unlikely snowstorm, and finally, into the cave where they meet the object of their search. And, just as in the old tale, they reverse their steps and, in this version, end up in bed under the covers, vowing never to go on a bear hunt again. The beautiful pastel watercolor paintings that fill the huge pages alternate with soft-textured charcoal sketches. The most impressive of the black, white, and gray drawings is the full-spread storm as it approaches. The final "reverse" scenes are small blocks, three to a page in rapid succession, in sync with the rushed pace of the text. Even the endpapers lend themselves to the mood of the tale. In contrast to the sunny beach featured at the front, a lonely bear walks the beach in the moonlight at the back of the book. The characters' faces are round and filled with expression. The rhyme is printed in a large, almost calligraphic typeface that leaps off the page, alive in onomatopoeic expression ("squelch squerch!" and "Hoooo woooo!") and reassurance for young listeners ("We're not scared"). This version adds vitality to Sivulich's more traditional I'm Going on a Bear Hunt (Dutton, 1973; o.p.). Can't go over it

Glancing at the cover of Michael Rosen and Helen Oxenbury's, "We're Going On a Bear Hunt", I thought something along the lines of, "Hrmph. I bet they watered it down and made it syrupy. There's no way this kind of kid's book (in which a father and his four children of different hair colors go hunting for a bear) is going to actually end with the family finding the bear and getting chased back to their house". Well, you can just color me wrong all over. Not only is the book faithful to the original song, but it's a hoot to boot. The words are those old familiar ones we all love so well, and the pictures are a high-stepping romp complete with adventure, daring, and danger. Everything, in fact, that a good picture book could hope to be.
If you've ever heard the song "We're Going On a Bear Hunt" then you know the way the story goes. A father and his rambunctious youngsters are setting out to locate one bear. They're not actually on a hunt in terms of carrying guns or anything of that sort. In fact, these people haven't anything with them but one another and the clothes on their backs. With their border collie along with they successfully cross the tall wavy grass (swishy swashy), ford the deep cold river (splash splosh), tromp through the ooey-gooey mud (squelch squerch), wander through the deep dark forest (stumble trip!), run through a whirling snowstorm (Hoooo woooo), and at last enter a deep dark cave (tiptoe). It's the dog that sees the malicious bear first and the brave troop run back over every place they'd been before to escape. In a moment of frenzied activity they enter their house only to discover that they've forgotten to shut the door. At the last minute they get it closed (angry bear safely outside now) and everyone crawls into bed and under the covers. The final shot in the book is one of the bear as he tromps solemly homeward again.
This is quite an exciting book. Author Michael Rosen has captured the enjoyable sounds of the story quite well, and the high tension towards the end is just delightfully scary enough for the youngsters. But it is illustrator Helen Oxenbury that really lets this puppy shine. She has the ability to create scenes in which characters are interacting with one another against huge evocative backgrounds. I'm very partial to a scene in which the family is joyfully running through the tall grasses, dotted occasionally with deep red poppies. The sky is a blue one, filled with light puffy clouds and in the distance a flock of birds travels up and away. Admittedly, I love a good pastoral illustration, but this kind of care for illustrations is visible in all Oxenbury's color pictures (each appearing on every other page). If you're at all familiar with Helen Oxenbury then you'll find numerous scenes in this story that remind you of her other books. The baby found here looks like nothing so much as a clothed version of the infant in, "Big Mama Makes the World". The muddy squelchy vista in another picture is reminiscent of the barnyard takeover attempt in, "Farmer Duck". She knows how to pick `em, Helen Oxenbury does.
Will kids be scared by a family chased by a bear? Pleasantly so, I believe. The shot of the bear walking home is enough to convince even the worry-wartiest of children that the family is not going to be eaten in the near future. All in all, this is just another one of those great picture books that fill the world. It reads aloud very well, so if you need a book to present to a large group, I've found the perfect match for you. If you like high adventure and a good tale, "We're Going on a Bear Hunt" delivers both in spades. A wonderful addition to any storytime collection.

One of the best choices out there

This is one of the first books my son responded to. I could read it to him and get him to say Uh Oh at the proper point. Months later he was able to add Oh No at the proper point. A book like this, with fun noises, great prepositional phrases, interesting drawings, a funny storyline, an exciting ending, and a repetitive reading sequence, really help children to remember what's going on. A kid who can remember a story can eventually learn to tell you that story, and sometimes even do so long before they're truly reading and decoding the words.

The board book format will always be lauded in our household. We like the durability and compactness of the books. The babies can easily turn the pages, the books withstand being thrown (hey, it happens) and stepped on, and the pages can be gnawed on without too much harm.

This is one of our favorites.

One of our favorites!

We love this book! As a parent of two toddlers, I have read a lot of children's books and this is one of my favorites! It is so fun to read and easy for the kids to memorize so they can "read" along. It's also really fun to act out the story, if you're feeling creative. The board book is very sturdy and we haven't had issues yet with durability. I am very pleased with this book and we've even purchased it again as a gift.
