LOVE This Book!!!

I absolutely LOVE this book. As a drum instructor I use it to get away from the traditional "2,4" beats. It even helped me brush up on my own skills as well.
I've had some younger students who have trouble reading drum music, let alone playing the proper drum at the proper time. I found that using this coupled with color coding right and left (ie orange highlighter is right, blue is left) it made it easier for the student to understand. Prior to using this book with that particular younger student, they could only play two parts at once. Now, because of the pedagogy of this book, most beats come pretty easily to that student.
I would highly recommend this book to anyone having trouble with playing simple beats and drum coordination. I would also say the seasoned player could get a lot of use out of this book, especially for site reading.

Essential book. Difficult but rewarding.

Free open independence of limbs should be any drummer's goal. To be able to play any rhythm with any limb regardless of what the other 3 are doing. This book breaks you down from the ground up. Most drummers will immediately notice their left foot as the weakest link start to catch up to speed with the rest of their limbs with the initial melodic coordination exercises. This is not an easy book, you'll be humbled very quickly if you expect to blaze through this one. It's imperative to take your time on this stuff. You need to step up to this book with a zen-like patience and a child-like excitement to the challenges that await. One extremely important tip to getting through this book is to assign each hand and foot to a different drum. The obvious would be...

right hand = floor tom
left hand = snare
right foot = kick
left foot = hihat pedal

This is imperative because it allows you to memorize the pattern by ear once you've played it enough. Something that would be impossible to do effectively with both hands on the snare or each foot on a kick pedal. Good luck and be persistent. This book only works if you work on it. I personally don't do very well sight reading music. I learn best by ear, so I have transcribed pages into a midi sequencer and learned by ear with a good system used for tracking my progress with each exercise. I truly love this book. It's a monster.

I recently decided to start taking lessons as a way to help me sight read through this book. My teacher told me most of his students didn't really enjoy it, as the musical application of the ideas are not spelled out for you. They simply wanted to move onto learning patterns that had an immediate and obvious musical application. As other's have said this book isn't designed to teach you new grooves and patterns that can be lifted directly from the book and used in an immediate musical context without using your imagination. These have more of a drill type feel to them. Which is to be expected. This book is designed to give you limb interdependence. It goes after one goal in an extremely solid and thorough way. It's up to you to translate that interdependence into musical ideas yourself. Every drummer knows what it feels like when they hit a snag with a pattern that requires slow practice to master. If you thrive on chasing that dragon, get this book. You will be a better drummer for it.

The Pot of Gold

If you are seeking help with limb independence on the drumset this is a must buy. It's the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow that you are seeking. Truly it is. It's not hard to use at all. In fact, it's extremely simple exercises, but they will indeed do what they say.

I just bought the book and I have only had it a few days. Yes, it's true that I can't speak from actual results yet, but just from starting in on these exercises I can see precisely how they are going to take me to full limb independence in baby-steps. All that's required now is for me to sit down and practice these though this book. I have no doubt at all that they will take me where I want to be in terms of limb independence. I can already feel it coming in the very first set of exercises.

Just as a tip for anyone one who buys, or owns, this book. The actual instructions are very brief. There really isn't much to say. The exercises speak for themselves. However they do say to play 2 bars of rhythm and 2 bars of exercises. They don't go into detail about that. What I realized they mean is to play two bars of groove (pick a groove of your own choice), and then two bars of exercises, drop back into your groove, then play the next two-bar exercise, and so on. Wow! That really helps and instantly gives these exercises a musical feel.

Also, some of the exercises are printed as eighth notes. You can put any kind of swing field on them you like. It's not about timing. All they are using the notes for is to convey which limb should play each note. So you can play these independence exercises to any rhythmic beat you so chose. It's not about rhythm, it's about limb independence. So it doesn't matter whether you're playing jazz, funk, rock, you name it. These exercises can be played with any musical feel you like. Just get a groove going and start playing these two-bar exercises, then two-bars of groove, and back and forth. You can't go wrong. You might even come up with some really cool beats of your own just from having gone through these independence exercises.

I can't recommend the book highly enough. Like someone else said, it's worth 20 stars if limb independence is your goal. You'll feel it coming as soon as you start in on these. Not to imply that it will come easy. You may need to start out slow, but you'll quickly feel that you're on the right path.

I'm certainly excited about this lesson book. Like some others have mentioned, it's quite unconventional in its approach, and as far as I can see this is the "secret method" I was seeking. The pot of Gold that I never believed existed.

I am missing like half of the figures and graphs in each chapter. There is some sort of glitch with the digital copy for kindle. So when they talk about a subject and refer to a figure I have no idea what they are talking about.

Cohen Connects With His Spiritual Heritage

Leonard Cohen, always the great poet, has done a masterful job of expressing the spirit of the Psalms in modern prosaic, poetic form. And like the son of the chief psalmist, Cohen has traveled a road that has taken him through many life experiences, only to come through them to arrive at the knowledge of that which truly matters. Book of Mercy is not only a literary gem, but a book of enlightening and thought provoking inspiration for Jew and Christian alike, not to mention that person we often refer to as a seeker.

Language and thought out of the ordinary

Because I had bought and read his latest book I decided to buy an old one. Since his songs are poems set to music this book is prose brought to the level of poetry. Short thoughts on his relationship to a higher being or muse or idea. Thought provoking. A pleasure just to read. The man has spent his life finding the right words and metaphoric language for his deep thoughts on love and meaning and life. Thank you, Leonard

Poet of Pain

Although Book of Mercy is written in prose, its soul is poetic.

To try to describe it I must point at the Moon -- there are no words

in me, experience it for yourself. My best friend's roots are Jewish,

mine are Catholic, we have evolved into an inclusive state of being,

yet Book of Mercy shows us the origins of our religions respectively --

althouth it is beyond either.

Please Go Back To Full Length Novels

Like everyone else, the ending here left me cold. However, because it is Walters, and because the rest of the book was so taut and edge of your seat suspenseful, I still give it 4 stars. Nonetheless, this is nowhere near as good as just about all of her full length novels, and I am left wondering why she switched to the novella format which I really think does not work as well for her.

Striking Start/Flat Middle and End

I have enjoyed this author's work for many years. She truly is talented, and she pays extreme attention to detail.

This novel grabs and holds you for the first third. The writer clearly studied carefully the culture of the black Africans featured in the book. Frankly, Walters' previous works demonstrate a keen ability to understand and appreciate cultures that are remarkably different from hers. This is a wonderful skill for a fiction writer because everything in the book is not dependent on a writer's limited exposure and cultural biases. This skill was obvious to me when she published "The Shape of Snakes" many years ago.

The leading characters were introduced nicely, and without any burden to the reader. The violence was graphic. The sexual assaults were described as they should be described -- as foul, ugly attacks on a vulnerable and innocent person. The plot develops and emerges nicely.

The introduction of the secret room in the basement reminded me of the writing technique used in one of Poe's short stories.

I found extremely impressive Walters' sense of, and description of, the mind and function of a young, uneducated and illiterate girl. She shifted with ease to very simple and very basic terms from the perspective of this person to describe her experiences as a very young captive and slave. Getting into the mind of this youngster, she never used polite or anatomical terms to describe parts of the body. Walters' clearly has the depth and the capacity to get into the mind of this character and describe the world and events of a person who never was taught anything. By way of examples, this black African girl describes the persons from outside her home -- her prison -- simply as "the white." (This reference was descriptive and fair; they actually were white people and the persons she lived with all were black.) Following a sexual assault and a violent penetration, the girl describes her vagina as "my hole." A simple mind might see a part of the body this way.

Following two homicides, the middle of the book gets weak. I found it somewhat boring.

The end of this publication was extremely weak. It just left me hanging unfairly.

Overall, this is a decent book. As I mentioned earlier, the beginning was very good; the character development was very good; the plot was developed well; the featured African culture was handled nicely; and the dialogue was clear and precise. What follows the first third was disappointing.

Richard presents a compelling argument even though he begs the question on a number of issues. A great work which bridges the space between monastic and scholastic theology.
