Fascinating hybrid of a book

I loved this book. It offers a scholarly yet oddly personal assessment of Rushdoony and Reconstructionism's broad influence. I say odd because it's not typical for a University Press book (Oxford no less!) to be written in such a personal tone. Ingersoll is both insider and outsider, having been in the movement for a while and now outside it as a Religious Studies professor. I thought she did an admirable job at self disclosure even as she maintained an even-handed tone in her analysis. I learned a lot about the various overlapping networks of Reconstructionists and fellow travelers. She did an excellent job summarizing the key concepts--postmillennialism, sphere sovereignty, dominion, partriarchy, etc.

Fortunately, it likely never will come to pass

Julie Ingersoll has a unique perspective in that she was for years involved in fundamentalist Christianity and even participated in peaceful actions against abortion clinics.
What the book posits is that a very small group of Reconstructionists have had a much greater influence in the larger fundamentalist world than their numbers might suggest. The group's influence extends to pseudo historian David Barton, who has been on a committee on curriculum for Texas' public schools and whose writings are taken as gospel by millions (despite his last book being removed from the shelves by the publisher because even fundamentalist Christian historians said it was a load of bollocks).
Reconstructionist thinking, according to Ingersoll, also heavily influences homeschool curriculum and the concept that the family (with father in charge) is solely responsible for educating children and that public schools are socialist and should be eliminated.
Ingersoll traces this thinking back to R.J. Rushdoony and shows how his writings influenced others over the years.
All in all it's a fascinating look into a world that hardly anyone in the U.S. realizes even exists. The broad Christian world -- including mainline and progressive flavors -- have largely not even heard of Rushdoony, and even some of the fundamentalists who teach his doctrines are unaware of the Reconstructionist origin of their teachings in some cases, according to the author. Their thinking even extends to far-right politicians who are not part of the Reconstructionist thought. But the end goal for the movement is for the U.S. to one day have a majority who share their beliefs -- a multigenerational effort that could take hundreds of years -- at which point their "godly" civil government will work toward their goals and Old Testament crimes will be punished by civil authorities with the punishments given in the Bible.
Personally, I can't wait for their barbaric theocracy to begin. Fortunately, it likely never will come to pass. Maybe this book will help the broader public recognize the Reconstructionists' influence and their goals.

An important and eye-opening work

Before reading this book, I'd never heard of Christian Reconstrctionism-- but now I can see its influence everywhere I the struggle between right-wing authoritarianism and progressive pluralism. If you want to understand the thinking (and passionately held beliefs) behind much of Tea Party and religious right conservatism, this book is a great place to start. If you lean toward reason and rationality, if you believe in democracy and social justice, this book will give you an insight into the mind of your enemy. And he is your enemy.

A Wonderful Love Story that Defines True Marriage......

Before reading this book I used to wonder if men and women really suit each other. Perhaps they should live next door and just visit now and then. But after reading this book, Love after Marriage, this quote comes to my mind “A successful marriage requires falling in love many times, always with the same person.” The author does a beautiful job of drawing the characters and showing all the ins and outs of a complicated but very different story line. If you're looking for a fascinating love story after marriage, this is it! It's beautifully written and grabs you from the beginning with the promise of taking you through a memorable journey. I've given this book as a gift to many friends who are in the process of discovering the true love with their married partners, a major focus in this novel. When you finish this book it would be a good question to ask yourself if you would have wanted to be any of these characters. For me this was a very pleasurable read. The people are fascinating, and the language is lovely. Bhagya is a fine writer, clear and easy reading. What a delightful and insightful book on many levels...., I am sure married people will have enough to take away from this book to enrich, enhance and strength their love lives and rightly understand and respect their partners!

A deeply emotional read

The author takes us into a deep journey of arranged marriages. All characters reveal their softer side and their illogical side. The main protagonist reveals the time tested truism of Indian arranged marriages....that you marry a family. The book has a very conversational style which suits me and the author does a great job setting up scenes that a reader (particularly those not familiar with Indian family setups) may find rather intriguing yet delightful. The book could have been a bit more nuanced in its treatment of characters.

In essence, the books reveals that there is no perfect companion. What is perfect today will change and the only way to lead a happy life is to adjust, compromise and on a an occasion be stern. I recommend this book to all. For Indians, it may bring out some raw emotions of their own and for a non Indian reader, the book gives a great insight into what works in Indian marriages and that love after marriage is indeed enduring albeit with a lot of speed bumps and trenches. Indeed such is life.

Congratulations to Bhagya on her first book and hope to read more books by her.

It's a First Book

I thought this book would be really interesting and enjoyable since it was about India. However, it really wasn't, because it was too bogged down with expository writing. Everything was told to us, everything. She was angry, but we don't see her anger, we don't feel her anger, we don't hear her anger, we are told that she is angry. The book tends to read like a list. She said this is a certain way. He turned his head and said something. They ate food. They talked some more. They went home. The sentences tend to be very short, very simple, and very void of feeling. It felt clunky and didn't flow, I never connected to anyone and never felt what the characters were feeling. I felt like I was reading a really long outline or a list of events, not a story.

Additionally, there were some errors, such as using bete and beti interchangeably. There were repetitive words in the same sentence: he was handsome and good looking. She was pretty and beautiful. Then there were repetitive sentences, he was angry in this sentence and the next sentence tells us that he was furious. Then there were poorly written descriptions, the wedding talks about him putting the sindoor on her forehead at her hairline, but it says it in a way that left me baffled until I called to mind the Bollywood movies I had seen. Further, the book will use Indian terms that are undefined, use Indian terms and give an English translation or definition in parenthesis, and use English terms and put an Indian translation in parenthesis. This format made it confusing. I also found myself calling upon my large store of Bollywood movies and the bits and pieces of language I'd picked up from them to understand what was being said and done in the book.

I think it was a good plot idea and full of interesting details, but I couldn't finish the book. It was too choppy, too confusing, too much like a list, not enough like a good story for me to enjoy.

Enlisting the help of the town's most famous resident―the last surviving Little Rascal, Hominy Jenkins―he initiates the most outrageous action conceivable: reinstating slavery and segregating the local high school, which lands him in the Supreme Court.

Here's how you should read this book

Rather than copy the other very astute reviews, let me just tell you how to read this book. It's challenging, and it doesn't always follow the standard dictates of plot, but you may enjoy it more if you know what to expect.

1) It's not a page-turning, finish-in-one-night kind of book. If you try, you'll miss out. I had to read it over several days, each session giving me a hundred things to think about.

2) When you get anxious for the plot to pick up, think of it as satirical standup, and read it like you'd listen to the comics to which Beatty's compared, namely Dave Chapelle. (If you're thinking of it as a novel instead of as satire, you can lose the thread of hilarity) When you're overwhelmed by the satire, think of it as a novel and try to piece together the experiences that make up Bonbon's character. It's hard to get hold of his character at times, and trying to summarize Bonbon Me's character is a (rewarding) reading experience in and of itself.

3) You may want to have google at hand so you don't miss out on the plethora (this word is on my mind after one particularly funny bit near the end), of cultural and historical references. You might know Plessy v. Ferguson and the scopes trial, but it would be hard, I think, to catch every reference, and the satire depends on them.

4) Yes, it's funny, but not in the LOL way as often as 'that so true it's painful' way. Reading the reviews, I expected to be chuckling every few pages. Instead I had a wry grin every few sentences. Don't let this deter you. The verbs come at the end of sentences so often that you really have to read it at a run if you don't want to lose the thread of what's going on, but I can guarantee the thread is worth catching. In the last few pages of the book, Beatty comes as close to speaking to you plainly as the author as he does in the entire novel, and what he had to say tied the its many disparate observations together perfectly.

Bad timing for a satiric novel about racism, unless you're devastatingly good

Who writes like this? I asked myself, having been overwhelmed with satiric jabs after about 25 densely written pages. Ishmael Reed? And then why compare Beatty only to another black writer? Was that racist? Woody Allen wrote this densely, stories full of caricatures and outrageous situations, but New-York-Jewish in subject, and then only a few pages long, not an entire novel. Surely Beatty couldn't keep it up.

But by page 227 his comic inventions were still going strong. Here the protagonist converts the "long out-of-business brushless car wash" in his L.A. ghetto into a "tunnel of whiteness" for the local children, with "several race wash options:"

By "dense," I mean that almost every sentence contains a comic explosion, a twist, something that leaves you breathless or laughing out loud. Who does that? I thought of Barry Hannah, a Southern writer now gone. I think Hannah would have admired Beatty and recognized a literary kinsman. Also, something about Beatty's writing seemed to come from African-American oratory, its ornateness maybe, like Stanley Crouch's writing about jazz, but it wasn't self-conscious. Certainly the point of view was uniquely African-American, and I'm sure as a white reader I missed some of the inside humor. But plenty hit home with me, and would with almost any other half-alert citizen of this great land.

Speaking of which: this is a horrible time in our culture—with everyone's cell phones recording the underbelly of brutal racist policing, with political reactionaries running amok—to be attempting satire. It damn well better be funny. Beatty succeeds with a scenario that's not only side-splitting but right up to the minute. (I'm tempted to give more examples but will forbear) He's brilliant. (He's also profane and vulgar, as how could he not be? The n-word alone is used probably 1000 times)

Chris Rock can be devastatingly funny sometimes. Key & Peele can be outrageously funny sometimes. Making a barb leap off the written page is harder. As one critic said: Beatty can reduce a sacred cow to hamburger with one sentence.

Catch 22 for race in America today

As James "Firlds of Fire" Webb carried a copy of Catch 22 around I Corps, I can see Catch 22 from an artistic distance as pure comedy.

Paul Beatty may in fact have more howling Catch 22 silliness per page than Major Major Major imagined. The narrator's two beloveds may even exceed Lieutenant Sheisskopf's wife.

From a Publisher's Clearing House grant of certiorari on his Me v. America law suit, and an unforgettably silly Clarence Thomas question about a black man accused of holding another as a slave, the word play and popular culture riffs resemble a fire hose.

Unless you take yourself too damn seriously, it is constant flow of chuckles interspersed with laugh-out-loud howlers. Myself, I was too serious circa page 120 but saw the Catch 22 analogy by page 200.

If you are not kinda sorta offended every now and again, you may not be paying close enough attention.

Obviously earned the Mann-Brooker prize, first to an American.

About the Author
Eric Seufert is a quantitative marketer with a passion for blending real-world problems with large amounts of data, econometric frameworks, and analytical systems. His professional specialty lies in programmatic statistical methods and predictive forecasting in freemium environments.

Eric received an undergraduate degree in Finance from the University of Texas at Austin and an MA in Economics from University College London, where he was an Erasmus Mundus scholar. Eric joined Skype immediately out of graduate school and subsequently held marketing and strategy roles at Digital Chocolate and Wooga, where he is now the Head of Marketing. Prior to graduate school, Eric worked at uShip, the Austin-based marketplace for shipping services.

Originally from Texas, Eric currently lives in Berlin. In his spare time, Eric enjoys traveling and writing.

Every once in a while a book comes along that perfectly encapsulates the ethos of our time. A book so remarkable, so sublime, so vivid and significantly poignant, that we have only but to stop, pause, and revel in the beauty of its' creation.

Freemium Economics: Leveraging Analytics and User Segmentation to Drive Revenue, is one of those books.

This is truly a seminal work by the author, one that, with radical zeal, distills down the principles and precepts necessary to survive in the byzantine and treacherous Mobile Gaming landscape.

Let us not fool ourselves, friends, for the sandbox we play in is a digital jungle. We breathe life into these mobile applications we build, pixel by painstaking pixel, only to have our hopes and dreams append to the D1/D3/D7/D30 retention metrics of our latest cohort.

The MOST in depth dig into the analysis of CRUCIAL freemium metrics

I received this book yesterday morning along with two others related to the field. We're preparing a freemium release and are looking for ways to see monetization of our non-game product through the eyes of a freemium game marketer.

This book gives me a deep understanding of what we need to calculate and review from a statistical standpoint in order to perform a deep analysis of our user base. It is focused on the calculation and analytical aspects. The other books spend more time on anecdotes and particular categories of advertisement/upsell/gameplay, whereas this book has comparatively few, which is fine with me. They don't really dig into analyzing the data.

This book is about gathering and analyzing the data to maximize LTV (Life Time Value of the customer). The only other place I have seen the type of explanation like in this book is in the author's blog mobiledevmemo.com.

The topics I found of particular interest related to measuring virality, events to be tracked for analysis, analysis spreadsheets and user segmentation. It helps if you have some background in statistics, but you can get most of the book if that's not your background.

Understanding this book will help you create and take every opportunity to understand your audience enough to maximally monetize your app.

Fantastic book for the freemium model

I recently moved into a PM role at a company that makes a freemium app and my Head of Product bought this book for me to read. I really enjoyed Freemium Economics...it's a very thorough overview of the freemium model, mostly from an analytics and revenue perspective, and for someone moving into product development with no prior understanding of freemium, the insight I gained from this book is extremely valuable. One thing to note is that the book doesn't go into detail about product design decisions...it reads more like a textbook, so it's very high-concept, and what it addresses really well is the process of developing and iterating on freemium products to maximize revenue. This is a great book and I'd definitely recommend it to anyone that needs a broad introduction to the freemium model

Helpful, but the price tag is a little ridiculous

I used this book to study for my HESI A2 test in Illinois. First and foremost, I'll say I LOVE this book. It prepared me well. However, it is a little flimsy for a $40+ price tag. The math section prepares you well, as does the grammar and vocab sections (vocabulary in this book was 100%, exactly what I found on the exam.) A&P could cover a little more, as could Biology. Biology went over mitosis and meiosis, but rather unclear and it didn't call the phases what it asks for on the exam, so learn those from another source (G1, etc.) A&P I supplemented with flash cards from quizlet. Don't be afraid to ask things that aren't in the book. Go online and find the answers. This book gives you the vague overview of what would be on the exam, and it's up to you to fill in the more detailed bits...which is ridiculous. If I'm paying the price of a cheapish textbook ($60 with expedited shipping and it still took two days??) the least it could do was provide more information. The tests, I really enjoyed. It did contain chemistry and physics sections, but I didn't need those. Reading comp was a little wimpy. Honestly, what helped me even more was the android app "HESI A2 Exam Prep" By Pocket Prep, Inc. It's free, although you can unlock a full version for $12 or $13, I don't remember, and the practice tests are awesome. I was terrified to take the HESI and I ended up passing with a 95% composite score. The best thing you can actually do is get this book, get the app, and make sure to take some peppermints and earplugs with you because the clicky-clack of other people pressing mouses and computer keys WILL get on your nerves.

Great for a quick review to help you prepare for HESI A2

I purchased this book because it was recommended as a study guide to help prepare me for the HESI A2 exam in Texas. It contains mathematics, reading comprehension, vocabulary (basic medical terminology), grammer, biology, chemistry, anatomy and phsiology, and physics. I found out that I will not be needing the chemistry or physics sections of the book, the HESI A2 in texas does not include those parts in the exam. It may be different for other states so always double check with your advisor. I did notice that some of the questions come off a little misleading and contain two possible answers. For example, one question in the biology section was: Which organelle would you expect to be present in a cell for detoxifying molecules? It offers multiple answers , two of them being smooth endoplastic reticulum and lysosome. The Book only explains that smooth ER detoxifies molecules and that lysosomes are responsible for intercellular digestion, which are both true but lysosomes also detoxify. Just little details like that. Other than that, the book is good. It is a little pricey and you can probably find free practice exams online. I purchases this because I've been out of college for a couple of years and needed a crash course guide to cram in two weeks and so far it has helped.

Outstanding Guide

This guide helped me tremendously! It does not cover all topics in detail (would be hundreds and hundreds of pages long), but it is an amazing refresher. A lot of the questions (if not all) in the HESI were covered in this book. I strongly recommend it!!! I passed all sections with 94 and above!
