I received this cookbook this weekend. I have tried a few recipes and find it easy to use. I love the champagne cupcakes. I also like that it gives great options for appetizers and party food beyond the cupcakes. The quiches, tarts, pies and cheesecakes all look great. I can't wait to try more. This would be a great book for families as kids would have a great time making a wide variety of cupcakes. It is also great for entertainers and others who want to impress their guests.

I have a large collection of cookbooks, but I can already tell this one will be a FAVORITE. Who would have thought you could make Crab Rangoon, Tomato Bruschetta, or Coconut Cream Tarts in a cupcake maker? I love this cookbook!

Recipes are not easy and they make a LOT of cupcakes

This book was not what I expected. I thought it would have a number of easy recipes (not too many ingredients, very quick to make) that made a few batches of mini cupcakes for my cute little cupcake maker. Instead, most of the recipes have many ingredients and require artistic skills to put together - and many would make quite a few mini cupcakes, 34 or 36 - that' a lot of batches. This book really was not for me. The "Easy" in the name "175 Best Babycakes Cupcake Maker Recipes: Easy Recipes for Bite-Size Cupcakes, Cheesecakes, Mini Pies and More!" did not seem to fit. The cakes look fancy and sound delicious.

Martin Luther King Jr exercised a tremendous degree of influence in a movement that between 1955 and 1965 successfully dismantled a system of legalised racial segregation and disfranchisement entrenched for over sixty years in the United States. How did King, who came from a subordinated group within American society, help effect this change? What background, characteristics, abilities and ideas enabled him to do this? Why was King so important in shaping the civil rights movement?

John A. Kirk looks at the sources of King¿s power in the black community and its relationship to wider American society, focusing particularly on the role of the black church, the philosophy of nonviolence and issues of leadership, whilst paying due attention to the voices of King¿s critics and detractors and to the limitations of his power. He locates King firmly within the context of other leaders and organisations, voices and opinions, and tactics and ideologies, which made up the movement as a whole.

Fifty years after the Montgomery bus boycott, which launched King¿s movement leadership, this book moves beyond the all-too-often oversimplified story of King¿s life and times to provide an innovative analytical framework for understanding the role played by one of the United States¿ most important historical figures.

Great information, too much self promotion

I think Woman Code is a fantastic book for all women to read, especially those in their 20s, 30s and 40s. Vitti does a great job of explaining how our bodies are supposed to function, the interplay between hormones and her message is extremely empowering. The idea that our hormone function is basically a system and we can knock over the dominoes, but we can also get it realigned and back into balance. Hormones have always been this black box and something that people feel are a puzzle and untouchable, but Woman Code gives you the tools to unlock it and figure it out. I also love the "every meal, every day" concept. It's a life-long effort and it takes real attention and work to make it happen, but it is possible. There just aren't any quick fixes. All good stuff! The reason I don't give this book 5 starts (and I wavered between 3 or 4) is because some of it reads like a blog post/promotional material. As soon as you pick up the book, you know that Vitti runs a successful business in NYC. If you're at all interested in her products, you'll know where to go, but she seems to chime in constantly about her clients, her business, her facebook page, where you can find more, etc etc. In my view, the beauty of writing a book is offering a low-cost product and getting information out to the masses. Undoubtedly, those who want more support know where to go, but when I buy a book I don't want it to be blatant promotional material for a practice. That's the aspect that feels a bit amateur to me here. But, overall, it's a great tool and something all women should read, whether or not they have known hormonal imbalance.

I Didn't Understand My Body Until Now

I'm embarrassed to say, as an educated woman who is health and fitness savvy, I really didn't understand much about the endocrine system, how it works, nor the impact that nutrition has on its various processes. This book isn't just about "eating healthy." This is understanding the entire engine that drives feminine functionality. At first I thought the title was more of a catch phrase. Now, having read the book, I really get that there is a "code" that is very much like an operating system, one that we can influence and regulate and work with to become our best selves. What an eye-opener. I'm eating kale. I'm using aloe vera on my face. Super drop dead simple things to incorporate. It's all working. The changes the author promises offer real results. I'm shocked - and I wasn't even a skeptic, but so much of the nutrition information out there is conflicting or really complex to execute. Whether you're looking to lose weight, improve your libido, trying to get pregnant, or dealing with hormonal changes, no matter the age, this information should be required reading for every woman to understand her body and to help her become her best Self. It is also the perfect time to be having these conversations. As more and more women are deciding whether or not to "lean in" it is becoming evermore important to identify with our bodies so that we are clear about the choices we make. Incredibly important information and perfect timing. This is the beginning of a movement that shifts the focus from trying to compete with men, to owning ourselves as whole women. I'd buy one for myself, my mom, my grandmother, my daughters, my sisters.... you get the picture. I think this is the tip of the iceberg on this topic. This will be a long term reference manual and a practical "doable" blueprint for many lifestyle changes for me.

TOO much promotion but definitely some good information

There are some good points in the book and it is definitely worth a read for every woman. However i have to agree with other reviews that there is far too much promotion. It would be fine if it were just a paragraph at the end of the book, so that people have the option to take things further and pay for this if they so wish. But unfortunately it gets pretty irritating as there's probably a whole page dedicated to this in each chapter if not more.

I would've liked a bit more detail into the nutritional areas. It's great to have a chart of which foods will be helpful for different parts of your cycle, however it would have been interesting to see specifically why these foods are good.

It may just be me with my interest in nutrition, and maybe this would be too much info for some, maybe a little overwhelming. However in my experience if you understand the details of how food works and why it is good for you, you're much more likely to stick to eating it and enjoy it as well.

It's a shame i feel if you're paying for a book it should have gone into a little more depth in each area. She could easily have done this if she scrapped the pages of constant promotion throughout. Too much money for what you get unfortunately.

I admire Alisa's intentions and knowledge, but the book could definitely be improved to be better value for money.

This is the complete book of U.S Presidents, revised and updated through the 2004 Election. It contains every president from George Washington to George W. Bush.

Each chapter contains more than 30 subheadings designed to create a composite portait of a President. The subdivisions go far beyond the readily available facts to cover each presidents major appointments, recreational interests, religion, career before presidency, legislation passed and more.

i like the format

i like the format, knowing that the same general topics are touched on across each president. it is very entertaining reading. degregorio includes enough unusual detail and skillfully hooks the reader. i find that degregorio is "fair and balanced" in his discussions of the positives and negatives of various administrations. it's a fun book to read with our children, when i have just a few minutes to read something, etc. sometimes i wish that it were in a more traditional history-story telling format. but then, it wouldn't be the excellent book it is. i sometimes find myself wishing that it provided more details. i realize that that is impossible! 20-some pages per president where over a million pages have been written on lincoln alone! this is a great starter book, stimulating me to ask more questions and look in other books. for the inexpensive price and the hours of delight i've obtained reading through it, this has been one of the best investments i've made!

This edition of the complete guide to U.S Presidents is an interesting read and the preferred choice amongst those of us who wish to learn more about the America's presidents. Each president gets approximately 20-25 pages covering all sorts of topics under sub-headings such as: Description of each guy, personality, family, campaign issues, issues faced within presidency and so much more. It is written in an approachable and pick-up and read style.

Some chapters makes for some very interesting reading (Richard Nixon, Thomas Jefferson, Ronald Reagan, FDR and George Bush to name a few) and others are unspectacularly average (cue Gerald Ford). But all in all a very good and insightful read into what each president what like not just professionally whilst in office but as a person as well. Well recommended.

In order to find this book useful, readers must already own the LEGO EV3 Mindstorms kit; author Benedettelli provides a chart of pieces in the appendix that readers should acquire if they own different versions of Mindstorms kits. Tech-savvy students will find the projects engrossing, but be forewarned that this text is not for novice Mindstorms users or those new to robotics. Black-and-white drawings may prove challenging for some to compare with real life colored LEGOs. Readers are treated to a comic narrative throughout the book that mimics the book's progress, which can help break up the tedious nature of instructional text and drawings, though they are more entertaining than informative. Benedettelli painstakingly describes how to manipulate the kits and their myriad parts and does not assume that the reader will have access to a computer, helpfully describing how to program without one. Daniele Benedettelli is known worldwide for his original LEGO robots, including his Rubik's Cube solvers and his humanoid robots. As a LEGO MINDSTORMS Community Partner (MCP), he helps to test and develop new MINDSTORMS products. He earned a master's degree in Robotics and Automation from the University of Siena in Italy. He holds educational presentations and workshops on Information and Communications Technology around the world and teaches robotics at the high school level.

Amazing and Fun Learning Tool from the Rubik Guy

I use dozens of mindstorm projects in our High School Robotics tutorials, and this is by far the most advanced, complete and innovative, and by FAR the most clearly illustrated. I tried out the projects at an advanced teach the teachers conference (also using Blankenships fine book: Robot's in the Classroom), which we buy in quantity, and even MS beginners "got" the pictures immediately.

The projects worked great with few glitches, and typical of No Starch, the code and diagrams were well edited and functional right out of the book. The author has a "save you money" attitude, and tries to show processor block techniques that don't require a laptop to execute, but also includes PC interfaces (see page references below) in advanced projects. As you probably know, you DO need the $350 Lego Mindstorms kit to conduct these experiments and build these projects! (For reference it is a great deal on Amazon, it is here: LEGO Mindstorms EV3 31313). This is a PROFESSIONAL level robotics kit, but one that even HS kids can enjoy.

Most books like this concentrate either on code or mechanics, and few do both well, let alone theory. I mean, even at over 400 pages and with 5 real projects, there is a LOT to cover, especially since this author really likes autonomous designs and working on deep (and custom!) details, like math and software that turn gear activators into transmissions via math (functions/code). Of the other top 3 MS project books, this is the ONLY one that not only covers scripting in detail, as well as gears/servos etc. AND also goes very deeply into logic, math, technical aspects of robotics, etc.

Remember, this young author is the one who created an award winning Rubik's cube solver! Some of the predator-prey code is done so elegantly that the military drone types will probably be looking at it-- in advanced work these sims require graduate school level differential equations, yet this inventor does it with minimilist code that High Schoolers and self taught hobbyists get right away! As long as your "prey" has a signature (eg IR), you're good to chase and eat with your voracious T Rex.

Part of the value you don't get in any other book is that the writer is a true inventor both mechanically and codewise, and you can see his practical experience on every page of shortcuts, wisdoms and rules of thumb you can use even in the most advanced robotics. A "solver" mind can write 5 lines of Haskell that will solve any Sudoku puzzle, while other more imperative coders take over 40 lines of Java. In robotics, with memory always at a premium even in those that run Linux, authors like this with real world accomplishments don't teach you a bunch of techniques you have to unlearn later, and get you and your students/ kids/ grandkids on the right track from day one, even with the physics, mechanical engineering and math. The "comic book" adds really give you a break from the plentiful "parts" mechanical illustrations and programming action throughout.

Takes a high school level mind to get most of it, and undergrad for some of the advanced concepts, but any intelligent layperson can get these done with K-12 "helpers." I don't know about Italy, but shop classes in the US are virtually gone (like sports programs are going!), so Lego Mindstorms is one of the few "STEM" courses that can hide out as math, science and engineering yet still teach numerous practical mechanical techniques, gears, angles, etc. while having real FUN.

Highly recommended, at the top of my top 5 list in this subject area, whether you're a hobbyist, teacher, student, or professional robotocist. GREAT adjunct gift with an MS purchase too-- I wouldn't invest in an MS kit without this book! AND if you don't have the $350 to shell out on an MS right now (who does today?), the "wisdom" of the code and projects (although not the specific mechanics, as the numerous illustrations are obviously MS) also work for parallax, robobasic and many other projects that require less investment. Some more advanced libraries are offering MS as a checkout item also, although the last one I got for one of my kids was an earlier version than this text covers, yet still 90% applicable.

A few page number references for the above topics (NOTE: this book is literally FILLED with illustrations, so don't worry if the text topics seem complex, the author takes painstaking time to illustrate everything from component builds to screen shots to a complete in-book comic! There also are little "Digging Deeper" boxes that explain advanced concepts.

There are FAR more illustrations than there is text, even though the breadth of topics is amazing). Essential Resource For Kids Of All Ages Who Want To Understand How Things Work

First of all a caveat: I do not work for Amazon, LEGO or No Starch Press, and I'm not related to the author. I'm a 63 year old kid who was weaned on Tinker Toys and Erector sets. I enjoy building things, can follow instructions and use a computer, and am innately curious about how the things I build actually work. I bought this book to better understand how the EV3 robots actually work, both mechanically and programatically, and have found it to be extremely useful.

Thus far I've built and programmed the first four robots (Chapters 1-14). I had no problem following the monochromatic instructions, although an ebook in full color is now available via No Starch Press.

The most interesting part for me is the clear explanation of how the programming blocks work, both singly and in combination. I didn't find the information on programming via the EV3 Brick App to be particularly useful--I suspect that most users will program on their PCs--however, you don't have to know any programming language to replicate and modify the programs which are richly illustrated. And those not interested in programming at all can simply download the programs from the author's website. The entire book is organized with just enough information for everyone--from those interested in making the robots "come alive" to those desiring a deeper understanding so they can create and activate whatever their imaginations can conceive.

A bonus: If you get stuck along the way you can email the author for guidance. He's already helped me on two occasions which has both improved my understanding and fueled my enthusiasm. And there's no charge!

I recommend this book to everyone, young and old. Almost makes me wish I was back in high school taking a robotics class. Well, almost.......................

A great introduction to the newest LEGO robotics system!!

The LEGO MINDSTORMS EV3 Laboratory is a book that makes a few assumptions of the reader: 1. The reader is new to LEGO building, 2. The reader is new to programming, and 3. The reader probably doesn't have a computer.

With over 400 pages, Daniele gives the reader an introduction to all the above, in an informative and fun narrative. The framing device for the book is comic of a boy becoming an apprentice to the scientist (Daniele's alter ego), making the book accessible to young readers. However, adults will find a tremendous amount of useful information when reading the book.

I learned a lot, including building with TECHNIC elements (which are in the MINDSTORMS sets and are constructed differently from the well-known LEGO brick) and more importantly, using gears. The building guide on gears in this book is clear and easy to understand, and also one of the first guides of its type I have seen in print.

Programming is also explained in a clear fashion - while the book deals with the programming that can be done on the brick directly (a new MINDSTORMS feature), it also touches on programming from its computer application. Again, this is the first book I have seen with a guide to on-brick programming, and it's easy to figure out with the illustrations shown.

The instructions and models are interesting, with each showing a different building concept. Things like biped (two-legged) walking and line following are explained to the builder as a model is built. Ideas for going beyond the programming are also included, so this allows the reader to explore further.

With all of this information, I strongly recommend this book for not only LEGO builders interested in MINDSTORMS robotics, but also FIRST LEGO teams to learn about building techniques and especially gearing. I would also recommend the digital version too, so its info is always close at hand while building!

For those who want depth in your art

[[VIDEOID:38904521]]If you are a regular reader of James Gurney's blog, Gurney Journey, you would expect nothing less. This book is as good as I expected. He dispenses his knowledge as freely as he does on his blog. Here's what he says about his own book from the introduction:

"This is not a book about figure drawing, anatomy, or perspective. It's not a step-by-step guide on how to draw dinosaurs. It's also not a recipe book for a particular paint technique, although all these topics are addressed in passing. What this book contains is a distillation of the time-tested methods that I've found to be most helpful for achieving realism in imaginative pictures."

If you haven't got the hint from the title, this book is about making your art real and believable. In every chapter, James Gurney shares with us what he learned when creating his paintings. There are topics on people, dinosaurs, architecture, vehicles, composition and his step-by-steps (not techniques but process). The tips he gives can be applied on other subjects as well.

The importance of research is emphasized and the amount of research he does really shows. While creating an illustration on ship wreckage for National Geographic, he talked to survivors to get an accurate account. He found out there's a drummer boy who used his drum as a float and drew that in. He also acted out the various poses of sailors in distress, rather than drawing them from imagination. The result is a painting that tells its story convincingly. The same goes for many of his other paintings.

Another interesting read is the story of him trying to design a Dinotopian fire engine. When he presented his concept art to a professional fire engine designer, it was critiqued to have form but not function. There's lack of heat protection for the dinosaur, lack of understanding on how water hose works and a complicated water pump design. The revised concept is a huge improvement in believability that I thought it actually might work.

He has provided lots of photos and his own work in the book. You'll get to see how he stages the props for reference, sketches and drafts, plenty of commissioned work (especially from National Geographic), the bird on his shoulder while he's drawing, the lousy-art incinerator he created from mirrors and other entertaining stuff.

Imaginative Realism is an enlightening and fun read. Highly recommended to professionals, beginning art students and those who wish to push their art to the next level in terms of depth.

Delivers!

I have been a long time reader of James Gurney's blog. My interest was not in sci-fi/fantasy, but rather, his insights into painting 'what's not there'. I have studied representational painting - the training is indispensable, but (obviously) focuses on painting a model or still life. The academies do not teach the lost art of painting realistic but imagined scenes - of course you can find classes about painting 'abstractedly' or from 'imagination' but not painting, say, an historic scene or creature that no human has ever seen alive (like a dinosaur) - and that's the gap filled in by this book.

The book offers a wide range of topics - from pleasant surprises like created imaginary maps that look 'real' to extensive coverage of the forgotten use of maquettes and dioramas.

What this book is not: Though this book is fun and interesting to read for non-artists, this is not an in depth 'how to' book on technique (though he does go over some techniques) - so before you set out to paint 'what's not there' you have to have the basic drawing and painting skills to be able to successfully execute the ideas in this book.

overall, its a great overview and practical guide creating paintings from your imagination that look 'real' but it's also just fun to read. Highly recommended.

It's like walking into a hobby store

When I first opened up "Imaginative Realism," the first impression that I formed was that the book reminded me of some of the older texts from the 1970's. There was something about the style of the text and the page layout that made me think of an older text from a used bookstore; I almost felt like I was walking through a hobby store. Though it may sound it, this is not a bad thing - in an age of Photoshop and 3D rendering programs, James Gurney's approach reminds the reader of the traditional approach to illustration.

That being said, this is no novice guide. There is no "the body is made up of shapes" step-by-step guide, this is no "How to draw" book for beginners. James Gurney assumes that the reader has a moderate to high level of skill in most of the areas he addresses. What he does explain are the ideas behind how the real world can provide insight into the fantasy realm. Maquettes, models, architecture, and even workable fixative - this is a great all around book for hobbyists as well as professionals.

Excellent book; slightly unfortunate formatting

The art is amazing and the story is compelling.

I picked up Volume 1 (the first half of the story, which is collected in its entirety here) while I was in Germany and loved it, so I decided to get the full story in English.
Sadly, despite the book being published at the same page dimensions in both languages, the images are at a lower scale in this English version. They really look beautiful in the German version where you see more of the art and have less empty margin.

A moment in history

I did not expect much from the book other than its art form and certain erotic ingredients. After reading the whole book, I find the story line quite appealing and it does drive my emotions.

It is a story of early migrants to the United State of America and the story describe the tough environment that one family face. On one side, they were outcasted by their own people, while on the other side they were attacked by native Indians.

If you are looking for more sexual excitement from this book, I would not recommend it. But if you want to inmense yourself in a nice story, then this would be a good book to read.

A very entertaining story with great artwork.

Manara's art speaks for itself, so no need to go on and on about it. But the stories written by him are usually pointless sex tales. The difference with Indian Summer is that Pratt actually gave him a great story (the struggles of early settlers for survival, and their unpredictable relations with the native indians). Manara expresses the emotions of his characters beautifully through his pencil. For those who like action, there is plenty of that as well. The duo's other book 'El Gaucho' is also a powerful graphic novel. This was a $20 well spent. PS: I've reviewed hundreds of graphic novels at my personal web page. Give it a shot.

I am doing my part 1 as a radiology registra ( resident ) so this book just simplifies my life and put things into perspective in a very simple way for someone like me who still has a lot to cover including physics this came in handy simplified some aspect that gave me a headache wish I had this book earlier .

Clinical Radiology MADE RIDICULOUSLY SIMPLE

I recommend this book for every student in their 3rd or 4th year of medical school.
This book is fairly thin and can be read during the first week of a Radiology Clerkship. It comes along with a CD so that you can practice reading x-rays. The only draw back to this book is that it focuses on x-rays and provides no information on reading CTs and MRIs.

I LOVE this book!!

This book was extremely helpful. I am so glad I purchased it. It gave me a quick primer on the basics of CXR, pelvics, etc. that was super easy to understand.
