You can't control how others see you, but you sure can manage it.

Most of us have a very different view of ourselves than others have of us. Whether we have a positive or negative view of our appearance, demeanor, or personality, we do not have the right or ability to have others see us in the same way. How they view us depends on which aspects of our lives they see, their own life context, and whether they have interacted with us personally for a length of time or have just heard about us from others. Yes, first impressions do matter and most of us have no idea how we come across in those instances.

Carol Keers and Thomas Mungavan have provided a very helpful guide to understanding this important part of our interactions with others. This book provides techniques and exercises that help you change those perceptions in ways that allow you to manage this important key to your professional and personal success.

The book has nine chapters and I found each of them to be valuable. The first is an introduction to the idea of perception and its very real power to affect our lives. They introduce the first of their acronyms - CLEARLI, which helps you remember what you need to project to have what they call Authentic Executive Presence. The acronym stands for Command, Leverage, Expectations, Audience, Relationship, Listening, and Inspiration. Reading this section and applying it will more than repay you for the book all by itself.

The rest of the chapters take you through the pieces of CLEARLI in detail. Chapter 2 talks about the power of communications and helps you develop a solid style. Chapter 3 is about Charisma and the use of your voice and keeping control of your body, voice, and nerves under stress. Chapter 4 helps you see your opportunities for influence and how to start with the `low hanging fruit' in your life. They also offer a nice primer on politics. Not to make you Machiavellian, but to help you be more aware of what is going on so you don't step on land mines and can use situations to help you rather than get hurt by them.

Chapter 5 provides valuable insights on how to properly set and manage the expectations of others - both at work and in your personal life. I liked the section teaching you how to learn from your anger rather than feeling the need to express it or getting into trouble by losing control. Chapter 6 teaches you how to make a compelling presentation and how to connect with your audience. For many people, making a presentation is something to get through, but these authors show you how to make it an opportunity to build your credibility with those in your audience.

Chapter 7 is about managing relationships including those that happen at a distance. They also talk about healthy conflict versus the poisonous kind most of us experience and the benefits of forgiveness and letting go of the stuff that isn't going to get better anyway. Chapter 8 teaches one of the most important tools any executive can have; the ability to listen and listen much more than you talk. Chapter 9 teaches you how to inspire others, how to give praise, and even how to ask for help in ways that make you stronger rather than floundering in weakness.

Understanding the effect you have on others...

Trying to figure out how others perceive me in the workplace is something that's very high on my list of concerns. The book Seeing Yourself As Others Do: Authentic Executive Presence At Any Stage of Your Career by Carol Keers and Thomas Mungavan goes a long way in helping to clear away those misconceptions and blind spots. It also gives you the tools you need to come across the way you need to in many different situations.

Introduction - Perception is Reality; Communication Foundations; Command of the Room with Charisma; Leverage Influence and Power; Expectations, Strategic and Tactical; Audience Connections; Relationship Competence, Locally and Remotely; Listening Engagement; Inspiration, Motivation, and Praise

Based on the title, you may think this is focused more towards the executive branch of your organization. Not true... There's plenty of material here that pertains to the way you interact at any level and in any situation. Executive presence is the ability to be viewed as one with authority and presence, someone who is authentic in their personality and who can connect with and inspire those around them. The acronym CLEARLI is used by the authors to explain that quality - Command, Leverage, Expectations, Audience, Relationship, Listening, and Inspiration. Once you understand that your impression of yourself is not reality, that the reality is perception that others have of you, you can start to build up those skills and remove those blind spots that are holding you back.

For me, I took a lot away from the chapters on using your voice effectively as well as becoming a quality listener. Communicating effectively with others is far more than just the words you tell them. It's the pacing of your words, the emotion and variation and body language. I need to understand how to control that much better. In addition, my skill at listening to others can stand some significant improvement. So often, you can communicate at a much higher level by shutting up and listening to the other person. Instead of trying to figure out what you're going to say next, focus on what the person across from you is trying to say. I need to work harder to get past that superficial level of understanding that comes with not completely focusing on that other person.

This is an easy read, well-paced and completely applicable to where you live. Time spent thinking about these concepts can have a dramatic effect on your personal and professional relationships.

Attention Smart People!

If you ever wondered why your amazing brain power has not propelled your career or personal life into a life fulfilled, you might want to consider the message in this book. Your intellectual horsepower will not necessarily make you an effective manager or leader of your team or your family. 'Authentic executive presence' could and should be taken very literally. People will not follow someone they don't trust. And, if no one is following, you aren't leading. Work, family or otherwise.

If you want to successfully communicate with others, this book is for you. The book drives home the point of how to actively listen to someone and that all audiences are a little different. If you are managing for results, getting a five year old to clean her room make take a little more finesse than getting a new young college graduate to understand the importance of getting a haircut before a job interview. It's all about perceptions, and usually you only get one shot. The book drives home the importance of credibility, leverage, relationships, setting expectations, inspiration.

We thought this book was so powerful that initially we asked only our management team to read it, and subsequently made it a requirement for every new employee who joins our organization. It takes years to change perceptions, so we thought it best to start our new folks on the right track, right away. About the Author
Scott Coplan, PMP,  is a project manager, educator, author, and speaker on project management best practices. He is the founder and president of COPLAN AND COMPANY, a project management software and services firm.  Scott managed EHR requirements definition and acquisition for a national specialty healthcare firm's multiple facilities and oversaw implementing over nine financial, administrative and clinical applications at three separate Los Angeles County, California hospitals in both in-patient and ambulatory settings.  He also holds faculty positions at the University of Washington Schools of Public Health and Medicine, where he teaches healthcare project management. 
David Masuda, M.D., is a physician and educator at the University of Washington. During the past 10 years, he developed and delivered courses in clinical care and applied clinical informatics for certificate, masters, and doctoral programs in health administration, medicine, and nursing.  He currently develops distance-learning approaches for healthcare higher education.

Must read for Healthcare CIOs

In their book, Project Management for Healthcare Information Technology, Coplan and Masuda have proposed that the successful implementation of projects in health care require the synthesis of three methodologies: project management, information technology management (product management) and change management. The first two methodologies are codified in the Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK) and the Software Engineering Body of Knowledge (SWEBOK). The third methodology does not have a formalized document outlining the process for introducing and implementing change in an organization; rather, it relies on theories and practices from the disciplines of organizational behavior and organizational development. They reason that the complexity of the health care environment and the importance of "buy in" of all of the parties to the implementation of new technology in the health care setting require that projects draw on all three methodologies.
The structure of this book enhances the message that the authors are communicating. Each chapter begins with a clear statement of the learning objectives. These objectives are then discussed in a logical order and build upon each other. The narrative is enhanced by multiple quotes from six project leaders in world renown health care organizations describing their understanding of the concepts presented in the text. Finally, each chapter ends with a conclusion summarizing the concepts from the chapter and providing endnotes with further information on the topics covered. The chapters cover each methodology in detail. Thus, making it possible to skip areas that the reader feels that they have fully mastered and permitting them to focus on the methodologies that they need to understand in further depth. The Appendix is a graphic model of the fully integrated methodology for health information project management. It illustrates how each of the three disciplines fit into the five basic process groups in a project: initiating, planning, executing, controlling and closing. This is a fitting conclusion to this comprehensive work on project management for health care information technology.

Yes - This Is It

I like the "this is it" review and agree 100%. I have now used the books approach on several projects with success. PMBOK does not address the Change Management piece and this is where the fail/succeed of projects falls. It is also one of a handful of books that I now have both the Kindle and print edition. The overall framework also works well in non-HIT and merger integration - as in any framework/methodology, tailoring to the project is essential, and this book has it covered.

"People side" of Project Management

Great to have the "People side" elevated to equal status with project management and IT management in the real "triple constraint" of healthcare IT. By addressing the communications required to change human behavior, Coplan and Masuda have not only moved Change Management to the forefront of the healthcare IT discussion, they also provide a methodology for Change Management that incorporates the "Knowledge Areas by Process Group" structure familiar to all project managers.

A MUST READ for anyone struggling to effectively address the "people side" of their projects or wanting to AVOID these pitfalls by effectively incorporating a Change Management Plan into their healthcare IT project.

Thinking in a new way

Kinship With All Life has made a lasting impression on me. The way the author gently leads the reader through his experience with animals and other life, as well as describing the special relationship those who are "gifted" have enjoyed has brought me to a new level of peace and relaxation. Pleasantly worded, easy to read, full of anecdotes and stories which are rather spiritual in nature, Allen has made a believer out of me.

I believe the author of this insightful and touching book not only reveals the possibility of deeper communications with all forms of living creatures, but also expresses a most profound principle on how it is done. The concept of all creation being a part of one infinite source (whatever that is; some call it love, truth, mind, spirit, God, etc.) is not new. But this author, through his great experiences with creatures of all types, discovered how to practically apply the principle of oneness to vastly expand communications with other beings. Of course the methods of communication are different, but the communication is evidently true, nonetheless. The author's experiences are so touching, I was inspired to try to do what the author describes, and had very interesting results. I won't go into that here, but I discovered that in trying it with animals, I realized that taking the time to honestly note and appreciate the good qualities of each living thing, has some changing effect on my relationship/communication with them. It does open some new line of communication in a mental way. But, it's not like telepathy or anything like that; I began to realize it has something to do with the principle: if there is one source, let's call it for this purpose "intelligence" or "mind," then this source must be the mind of of all living things? In this way, all living things could be connected? Therefore, it makes sense that if we have a question, problem, etc. we'd like to address with another living creature, we could express it mentally and listen patiently for the response, which can come in a variety of interesting ways...be it a sudden thought we have, a brilliant idea, a feeling, etc. Obviously, it is not a verbal or even conscious response, per se, from the creature, but as the mind of the creature is the source of all intelligence, an intelligent response can come, nonetheless! No doubt it takes a level of belief that all this is possible before we will even attempt this form of patient listening. Without listening how can we ever hear anything on any level? Doesn't this question really hit a chord of truth about most of our problems in life. We're all so busy talking and doing things...the art of really getting outside of all that and listening, is barely ever practiced. I think this book leaves such a lasting impression because it reminds us to listen, which is really food for our very souls, but even more importantly it shows us the very practical results of doing so. As this book, in essence, expresses and proves the spiritual principle in practice, it is very unique and refreshing.

JUST READ IT. Learning to be in such harmony with an animal is just an amazing and wonderful read...and its TRUE. What more can you want? you can learn from it as well; it teaches a different perspective toward all life that will never fade away no matter how many years go by.

The term "visual dictionary" appealed to me because I work with an ASD population. I was not disappointed and have used these books and workbooks for teaching practical information that students may have missed in their everyday lives. I find it especially useful for middle and high schoolers. The graphics are excellent, detailed and sometimes small.

Great low-level supplement to the OPD

I'm an ESL teacher and this is an excellent resource for my low level students. Be sure to buy the actual Oxford Picture Dictionary that goes with it as this is just worksheets and communicative exercises that students need that book to complete. Together, they're great for helping students improve their vocabulary in a student-centered way ( a lot of pair work and communicative activities) without translating to their native language.

Great for ESL One on One

I have just started using this with my ESL student in conjunction with the Oxford Picture Dictionary. It uses repetition to help my student retain new vocabulary. Each page in the workbook correlates with the same page in the dictionary so it is easy for her to use. Workbook is colorful and interesting and also includes 4 CD's for listening practice.
